Abstract

A content-based expertise level inferencing system and method analyzes content such as text-based content that is associated with a user and infers an expertise level of the user that is associated with a topic. Language-based analytic techniques may be applied in inferring the expertise level, including the application of domain-specific vocabulary and frequency analyzes. The expertise level may be further inferred based on usage behaviors of the user and/or other users. Calibration information may be applied in generating the inference of the expertise level. Recommendations may be generated based on the inferred expertise level, and explanations for the recommendation and/or the inference may be generated for delivery to a recommendation recipient.

Claims (47)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

accessing a plurality of topics that each have an association with, or a potential association with, one or more automatically-determined expertise levels that are associated with a plurality of users of one or more computer-implemented systems;

identifying computer-implemented content published by one user of the plurality of users; and

inferring automatically an expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred by a computer-implemented function executed on a processor-based device in accordance with an automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

identifying the computer-implemented content published by the one user of the plurality of users, wherein the content is text-based.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inferring automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred by the computer-implemented function executed on the processor-based device in accordance with the automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content, wherein the automatic analysis comprises a word frequency analysis.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

inferring automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred by the computer-implemented function executed on the processor-based device in accordance with the automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content, wherein the automatic analysis comprises the word frequency analysis, wherein the word frequency analysis is informed by domain-specific language.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inferring automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is further inferred by the computer-implemented function executed on the processor-based device in accordance with a plurality of usage behaviors associated with the user.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inferring automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is further inferred by the computer-implemented function executed on the processor-based device in accordance with a plurality of usage behaviors associated with one or more other users.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating an explanation for the inference of the expertise level for delivery to a user, wherein the explanation comprises a reason for the inference of the expertise level.

8. A computer-implemented system comprising one or more processors configured to:

access a plurality of topics that each have an association with, or a potential association with, one or more automatically-determined expertise levels that are associated with a plurality of users of one or more computer-implemented systems;

identify computer-implemented content published by one user of the plurality of users; and

infer automatically an expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred in accordance with an automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

access the plurality of topics that each have the association with, or the potential association with, the one or more automatically-determined expertise levels that are associated with the plurality of users of the one or more computer-implemented systems, wherein the plurality of topics are automatically generated based on usage behavior information.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred in accordance with the automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content, wherein the automatic analysis comprises a word frequency analysis.

11. The system of claim 10 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred in accordance with the automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content, wherein the automatic analysis comprises the word frequency analysis, wherein the word frequency analysis is informed by domain-specific language.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is further inferred in accordance with a plurality of usage behaviors associated with the user.

13. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is further inferred in accordance with a plurality of usage behaviors associated with one or more other users.

14. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is further inferred in accordance with an automatically inferred expertise level associated with another user.

15. The system of claim 8 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

recommend the one user of the plurality of users to a recommendation recipient based, at least in part, on the expertise level.

16. The system of claim 15 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

generate an explanation of the recommendation for delivery to the recommendation recipient, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to the expertise level.

17. A computer-implemented system comprising one or more processors configured to:

access a plurality of topics that each have an association with, or a potential association with, one or more automatically-determined expertise levels that are associated with a plurality of users of one or more computer-implemented systems;

identify computer-implemented content published by one user of the plurality of users; and

infer automatically an expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred in accordance with an automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content and expertise calibration information.

18. The system of claim 17 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

infer automatically the expertise level of the one user of the plurality of users that is associated with the one topic of the plurality of topics, wherein the expertise level is inferred in accordance with the automatic analysis of the computer-implemented content and the expertise calibration information, wherein the expertise calibration information comprises a benchmark result of another user.

19. The system of claim 17 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

recommend the one user of the plurality of users to a recommendation recipient based, at least in part, on the expertise level.

20. The system of claim 19 , further comprising the one or more processors configured to:

generate an explanation for the recommendation of the one user of the plurality of users, wherein the explanation comprises a reference to the expertise level; and

deliver the explanation to the recommendation recipient.
