Abstract

Example adjustable electrodes are described. One example adjustable electrode includes two or more contacts configured to selectively deliver high frequency alternating current (HFAC) to a nerve in an amount sufficient to produce an HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve. The example adjustable electrode may also include a logic configured to selectively control which of the two or more contacts deliver HFAC to the nerve to control whether the nerve electrode is in a first (e.g., onset response mitigating) configuration or in a second (e.g., HFAC nerve conduction block maintenance) configuration. The electrode may be used in applications including, but not limited to, nerve block applications, and nerve stimulation applications. The electrode may be adjusted by changing attributes including, but not limited to, the number, length, orientation, distance between, surface area, and distance from a nerve of contacts to be used to deliver the HFAC.

Claims (40)

1. An adjustable nerve electrode, comprising:

a set of contacts configured to switch between a first geometric configuration and a second geometric configuration relative to a nerve by altering a physical relationship of the set of contacts:

where, in the first geometric configuration, the set of contacts is configured to apply a first HFAC to the nerve to mitigate an onset response, where the first HFAC has a threshold current sufficient to establish an HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve; and

where, in the second geometric configuration, the set of contacts is configured to apply a second HFAC to the nerve temporally after the onset response is mitigated, the second HFAC having a current sufficient to maintain the HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve.

2. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the physical relationship comprises a distance between contacts of the set of contacts.

3. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the physical relationship comprises a surface area of a contact of the set of contacts relative to the other contacts.

4. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the physical relationship comprises an orientation of a contact of the set of contacts.

5. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the first geometric configuration mitigates the onset response by minimizing a threshold current of the nerve required to establish the HFAC nerve conduction block.

6. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the first geometric configuration mitigates the onset response by maximizing one or more of, neuronal membrane depolarization in the nerve, extracellular activation function produced by the electrode, and the degree of synergistic contribution to membrane depolarization by sodium currents at multiple nodes of Ranvier in the nerve.

7. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 1 , where the adjustable nerve electrode is configured to use a first subset of contacts of the set of contacts for the first geometric configuration and a second subset of contacts of the set of contacts for the second geometric configuration.

8. An electrode, comprising:

two or more contacts configured to physically reconfigure between a first geometric configuration and a second geometric configuration relative to a nerve,

where the first geometric configuration is an onset mitigating configuration, and wherein in the first geometric configuration, the two or more contacts are configured to apply a first HFAC to the nerve to mitigate an onset response, where the first HFAC has a threshold current sufficient to establish an HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve, and

where the second geometric configuration is a HFAC nerve conduction block maintenance configuration, and wherein in the second geometric configuration, the two or more contacts are configured to apply a second HFAC to the nerve temporally after the onset response is mitigated, the second HFAC having a current sufficient to maintain the HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve; and

a logic configured to selectively control the physical reconfiguration between the first geometric configuration and the second geometric configuration.

9. The electrode of claim 8 , where the first geometric configuration is configured to minimize a threshold current required to establish the HFAC nerve conduction block by controlling one or more of:

a number of contacts to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a length of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

an orientation of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a distance between contacts to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a surface area of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a shape of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC, and

a distance between a contact and the nerve.

10. The electrode of claim 9 , where the second geometric configuration is configured to minimize a current required to maintain the HFAC nerve conduction block by controlling one or more of:

a number of contacts to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a length of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

an orientation of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a distance between contacts to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a surface area of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC,

a shape of a contact to be used to deliver the HFAC, and

a distance between a contact and the nerve.

11. The electrode of claim 8 , where the first geometric configuration is configured to maximize neuronal membrane depolarization in the nerve.

12. The electrode of claim 8 , where the logic is controlled to select contacts to apply HFAC to the nerve in response to one or more of, an external signal originating external to the electrode, and an internal signal originating internal to the electrode.

13. An adjustable nerve electrode, comprising:

a set of contacts configured to switch between a first geometric configuration and a second geometric configuration relative to a nerve by altering a physical relationship of the set of contacts,

where, in the first geometric configuration, the set of contacts is configured to apply a first HFAC to the nerve to mitigate an onset response, where the first HFAC has a threshold current sufficient to establish an HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve, and

where, in the second geometric configuration, the set of contacts is configured to apply a second HFAC to the nerve temporally after the onset response is mitigated, the second HFAC having a current sufficient to maintain the HFAC nerve conduction block in the nerve; and

a control logic configured to cause the adjustable nerve electrode to switch between the first geometric configuration and the second geometric configuration.

14. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 13 , where the control logic is external to the adjustable nerve electrode.

15. The adjustable nerve electrode of claim 13 , where the control logic is internal to the adjustable nerve electrode.
