Abstract

A sensor system for measuring an elastic modulus and a shear modulus and a method for evaluating a tissue. The invention pertains to a method for determining the presence of and/or characterizing abnormal growths, using a piezoelectric finger sensor (PEFS) system. The PEFS system may be particularly useful for screening for tumors and various forms of cancer. Additionally, the PEFS system may be useful for various dermatological applications.

Claims (33)

1. A method for evaluating tissue to obtain information useful to predict a presence of abnormal tissue, comprising steps of:

(a) applying a first compressive force to a first location on normal tissue of the subject using at least one sensor comprising a piezoelectric material and a driving electrode for applying a driving force to said sensor;

(b) detecting a first displacement of said piezoelectric material resulting from application of said first compressive force on said normal tissue while applying said driving force to said sensor;

(c) applying a second compressive force to a second location on said tissue of said subject using said at least one sensor;

(d) detecting a second displacement of said piezoelectric material resulting from application of said second compressive force on said second location on said tissue while applying said driving force to said sensor; and

(e) comparing said first and second displacements.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising an evaluating step to predict the presence of abnormal tissue.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein said evaluating step predicts type of abnormal tissue.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said abnormal tissue is cancerous tissue.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said at least one sensor is an array comprising a plurality of sensors arranged to be capable of each simultaneously applying compressive force to at least one location on said tissue.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein said compressive force is an indentation compressive force.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein step of applying a compressive force to said location on said tissue further comprises the step of applying a set of voltages to said driving electrode.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, screening, identifying or diagnosing a type of cancer selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, or liver cancer.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the tissue is heterogeneously dense breast tissue.

10. A method for evaluating tissue to obtain information useful to predict a presence of abnormal tissue, comprising a step of:

(a) applying a first compressive force to a first location on normal tissue of the subject using at least one sensor comprising a piezoelectric material and a driving electrode for applying a driving force to said sensor;

(b) detecting a first displacement of said piezoelectric material resulting from application of said first compressive force on said normal tissue while applying said driving force to said sensor;

(c) determining from said first displacement a first net compressive force at said first location exerted by a combination of the compressive force applied at said first location and a countering compressive force resulting from tissue deformation;

(d) applying a second compressive force to a second location on said tissue of the subject using at least one sensor comprising a piezoelectric material and a driving electrode for applying a driving force to said sensor;

(e) detecting a second displacement of said piezoelectric material resulting from application of said second compressive force to said tissue at said second location while applying said driving force to said sensor ;

(f) determining from said second displacement a net compressive force exerted on said second location by a combination of the compressive force applied at said second location and a countering compressive force resulting from tissue deformation; and(g) comparing set first and second net compressive forces.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor further comprises a second piezoelectric layer.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sensor has a rectangular shaped tip.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising screening for, identifying or diagnosing a type of cancer selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, or liver cancer.

14. The method of claim 10 , further comprising a step of predicting the presence of abnormal tissue at said second location based on information obtained in said comparing step.

15. The method of claim 1 , further comprising steps of repeating steps (c)-(d) one or more times at additional different locations on said tissue,

comparing the determined displacements at said one or more additional different locations to said first displacement, and

creating a map of the tissue based on said comparisons of the displacements.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the compressive forces applied at each said location are substantially the same.

17. The method of claim 10 , further comprising steps of repeating steps (d)-(f) one or more times at additional different locations on said tissue,

comparing the determined net compressive forces at said one or more additional different locations to said first net compressive force, and

creating a map of the tissue based on said comparisons of the net compressive forces.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the compressive forces applied at each said location are substantially the same.
