Abstract

Provided are methods and systems for variable speed playback. In one aspect the disclosure provides for receiving content having a first playback speed, determining a second playback speed for at least a portion of the content based on a playback factor, associating the second playback speed with the portion of the content, and providing at least the portion of the content at the second playback speed to a display device.

Claims (38)

1. A method comprising:

transmitting content to a first plurality of user devices, the content having a first playback speed at which the content is to be rendered on the first plurality of user devices;

detecting a change from the first playback speed to a second playback speed for the content by a portion of the first plurality of user devices;

associating the second playback speed with the content; and

transmitting the content to a second plurality of user devices, the content having the second playback speed at which the content is to be rendered on the second plurality of user devices.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the content comprises a movie.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining that the content corresponds to a content type.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

determining that second content corresponds to the content type; and

providing the second content at the second playback speed.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the content type comprises a movie.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of user devices are associated with a playback profile.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second plurality of user devices are associated with the playback profile.

8. A method comprising:

receiving content at a first time at a first user device from a content source, the content having a first playback speed;

receiving a command to change from the first playback speed to a second playback speed;

transmitting the received command and the second playback speed to the content source; and

receiving the content at the first user device at a second time, wherein the content is provided at a third playback speed based on the second playback speed and one or more other playback speeds received at the content source from one or more other user devices.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the content comprises a commercial.

10. The method of claim 8 , further comprising determining that the content corresponds to a content type.

11. The method of claim 10 , further comprising:

determining that second content corresponds to the content type; and

providing the second content at the third playback speed.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the content type comprises a television program.

13. The method of claim 8 , wherein the first user device and the one or more other user devices are associated with a playback profile.

14. A method comprising:

transmitting first content and second content to a user device to be displayed at a first playback speed, wherein the first content is simultaneously displayed with the second content, and wherein the first content comprises first content information and the second content comprises second content information;

receiving a command to change from the first playback speed to a second playback speed;

determining that the first content is to be displayed at the second playback speed and the second content is to be displayed at the first playback speed based on the first content information and the second content information; and

transmitting the first content to the user device to be displayed at the second playback speed and the second content to be displayed at the first playback speed.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the first content comprises a music video.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the second content comprises an overlay.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the overlay comprises a static image.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising determining that the first content corresponds to a content type based on the first content information.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

determining that third content corresponds to the content type; and

providing the second content at the second playback speed.

20. The method of claim 18 , wherein the content type comprises audio only content.
