Abstract

The present invention provides novel stable, liquid compositions comprising chalcogenides or salts thereof. These compositions may be used for a variety of purposes, including the treatment and prevention of ischemic or hypoxic injury, as well as in the preservation of biological matter.

Claims (18)

. A sterile, stable aqueous pharmaceutical composition comprising: a solution of deoxygenated water and sodium sulfide; wherein the sodium sulfide produces Na2S, H2S and HS—; wherein the solution further comprises sulfide oxidation products selected from the group consisting of polysulfide, sulfite, sulfate and thiosulfate; and wherein the oxidation products comprise sulfate in the range of 0%-1.0%, sulfite in the range of 0%-1.0%, polysulfide in the range of 0%-2.0% or thiosulfate in the range of 0%-1.0%.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said HS— has a concentration in the range of 50 mM to 150 mM.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said HS— has a concentration in the range of 65 mM to 75 mM.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said HS— has a concentration in the range of 68-72 mM.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said HS— is present in amounts ranging from about 95% to about 100% by w/v.

. The composition of claim 1 which is stable for a storage period of about 6 months at a temperature range of 23°-27° C.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition has an osmolarity in the range of 250-330 mOsmol/L.

. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition is near isotonic.

. The composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition further comprises a pH modifying agent.

. The composition of claim 9 , wherein said pH modifying agent is selected from the group consisting of: carbon dioxide, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid or hydrogen sulfide.

. The composition of claim 1 which has an oxygen content of less than or equal to 5 μM for about six months.

. The composition of claim 1 wherein said composition is stored in an impermeable container.

. A kit comprising one or more containers comprising a composition of a sulfide, wherein said composition has a pH in the range of 6.5 to 8.5.

. The kit of claim 13 , wherein said composition is isotonic.

. The kit of claim 13 , wherein said containers are light protective.

. The kit of claim 13 , wherein said containers are amber vials.

. The kit of claim 13 , wherein said containers are gas impermeable.

. The kit of claim 13 , wherein said composition is stored in said container under an inert atmosphere or noble gas.
