Abstract

An apparatus and method for minimally invasive suturing is disclosed. A suturing device for minimally invasive suturing includes proximal section having a proximal end, a distal end, and a longitudinal axis therebetween; a suture head assembly extending from the distal end of the proximal section; a suturing needle having a pointed end and a blunt end, the suturing needle capable of rotating about an axis approximately perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the proximal section, wherein the pointed end of the suturing needle is positioned within the suture head assembly prior to and after rotation of the suturing needle; and an actuator extending from the proximal end of the proximal section to actuate a drive mechanism having a needle driver for engaging and rotating the suturing needle.

Claims (28)

1. An apparatus for operating on tissue, the apparatus comprising:

(a) a housing defining a channel, wherein the channel is configured to receive a needle such that the needle is movable within the channel;

(b) a drive gear assembly positioned proximate to the needle, wherein the drive gear assembly includes:

(i) a first gear including a first plurality of teeth;

(ii) a second gear including a second plurality of teeth; and

(ii) a reciprocating link including a third plurality of teeth configured to intermesh with the first plurality of teeth on the first gear and the second plurality of teeth on the second gear, wherein the rotational movement first gear and the second gear are constrained to rotate in the same direction at least in part due to interaction with the teeth of the link; and

(c) a drive arm coupled with a radially outward portion of each of the first gear and second gear of the drive gear assembly to cause the drive arm to be substantially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the apparatus throughout a range of motion of the drive arm, wherein the drive arm includes a bearing surface that is configured to engage the needle to thereby cause orbital movement of the length of the needle along a circular path within the channel of the housing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a base and a cover, wherein the base is coupled with the cover.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the channel is defined in a removable portion of the housing.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the removable portion of the housing is disposable.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the removable portion of the housing is a replaceable cartridge that includes a suturing needle.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the replaceable cartridge is covered at least in part by the cover when the cover is coupled to the base.

7. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the base defines a recess, wherein the link is configured to reciprocate within the recess of the base.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the housing further includes a first pin and a second pin, wherein the first pin is configured to receive the first gear, and wherein the second pin is configured to receive the second gear.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the link includes a third gear configured to mesh with the first gear and the second gear.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the link includes an idler configured to mesh with the first gear and the second gear.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first gear, the second gear, the link and the drive arm cooperate to form a four bar linkage.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the channel of the housing is arcuate, and further wherein the needle is configured to move orbitally through the channel.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the housing includes a pawl, wherein the pawl is configured to engage the needle to prevent the needle from moving in a reverse direction.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a resilient member extending into the channel, wherein the resilient member is configured to engage the needle to prevent the needle from moving in a reverse direction.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a handle portion, wherein the handle portion includes an actuator configured to actuate the drive gear assembly.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 , wherein the housing is rotatable relative to the handle portion.

17. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the housing is configured to receive tissue, and further wherein the apparatus is configured to suture the tissue received within the housing.

18. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the channel is disposed within a cartridge configured for releasable attachment to the housing.

19. The apparatus of claim 18 , wherein the housing further includes a cartridge holder assembly for attaching and releasing the cartridge.

20. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator that is removably attached to the housing.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the housing is disposable.

22. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the actuator is attached to a handle for the apparatus.
