Abstract

In at least one embodiment, an apparatus comprising a vehicle inverter is provided. The vehicle inverter is programmed to invert a direct current (DC) input into a maximum alternating current (AC) output to power at least one external load and to receive first information indicative of whether a vehicle is in one of a drive mode and a park mode. The vehicle inverter is further programmed to provide the maximum AC output to the power the at least one external load in response to the information indicating that the vehicle is in the park mode and to invert the DC input into a first AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the information indicating that the vehicle is in the drive mode.

Claims (28)

1. An apparatus comprising

a vehicle inverter programmed to:

invert a direct current (DC) input into a maximum alternating current (AC) output to power at least one external load;

receive first information indicative of whether a vehicle is in one of a drive mode and a park mode;

provide the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the first information indicating that the vehicle is in the park mode; and

invert the DC input into a first AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the first information indicating that the vehicle is in the drive mode.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to receive the first information on a data communication bus.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein the first information as received on the data communication bus corresponds to at least one of vehicle speed and transmission status.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the maximum AC output is approximately 400 W.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to invert the DC input into a second AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in the event the first information is not received at the inverter.

6. The apparatus of claim 5 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to invert the DC input into the second AC output for a predetermined amount of time.

The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the inverter is further programmed to determine whether the DC input as provided from a battery is within a predetermined voltage range that includes a first predetermined threshold and a second predetermined threshold, the second predetermined threshold being greater than the first predetermined threshold.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the inverter is further programmed to invert the DC input into a second AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power at least one external in response to the DC input being less than the first predetermined threshold.

9. The apparatus of claim 7 wherein the inverter is further programmed to disable inverting the DC input in response to the DC input being greater than the second predetermined threshold.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the vehicle inverter includes a thermistor to measure an ambient temperature within the vehicle inverter to generate a measured ambient temperature.

The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to invert the DC input into a second AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the measured ambient temperature being greater than a predetermined temperature value.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to receive second information indicative of the vehicle undergoing a snow plow event.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the vehicle inverter is further programmed to stop inverting the DC input in response to the second information indicating that the vehicle is undergoing the snow plow event.

14. A method comprising:

inverting a direct current (DC) input into a maximum alternating current (AC) output to power at least one external load;

receiving information indicative of whether a vehicle is in one of a drive mode and a park mode;

providing the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the information indicating that the vehicle is in the park mode; and

inverting the DC input into a first AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in response to the information indicating that the vehicle is in the drive mode.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising wherein receiving the information further comprises receiving the information on a data communication bus.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the information as received on the data communication bus corresponds to at least one of vehicle speed and transmission status.

17. The method of claim 14 further comprising inverting the DC input into a second AC output that is less than the maximum AC output to power the at least one external load in the event the information is not received at the inverter.

18. The method of claim 17 further comprising inverting the DC input into the second AC output for a predetermined amount of time.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the maximum AC output is approximately 400 W.
