Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a method for receiving a signal representative of a displacement of at least a portion of a computer mouse from a surface of a mouse pad, and causing a change in a state of a video game presented by a gaming system according to the signal. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

obtaining a gaming venue state of a game presented by a gaming system and controllable by a computing device;

detecting a computer mouse located on a top surface of the housing assembly;

detecting a removal of the computer mouse from the top surface of the housing assembly at a distance that exceeds a first distance threshold, wherein the first distance threshold is associated with one or more substitute gaming stimulations corresponding to a gaming action, and wherein the distance threshold is established based on user-generated input defining a displacement range from the top surface of the housing assembly;

responsive to detecting the removal of the computer mouse:

identifying a gaming stimulation of the one or more substitute gaming stimulations associated with the gaming action based on a user profile, wherein the user profile associates substitute gaming stimulations with the game;

generating a signal according to the substitute gaming stimulations and the gaming venue state; and

transmitting, to the computing device, the signal to cause a change in a state of the game controllable by the computing device corresponding to the gaming action.

2. The mouse pad of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a request to associate the gaming action with detecting the computer mouse at or exceeding the first distance threshold from the top surface of the housing assembly; and

including the one or more substitute gaming stimulations in the signal transmitted to the computing device to cause the change in state of the game.

3. The mouse pad of claim 2 , comprising a display, wherein the display is integral to the housing assembly, and wherein the operations further comprise:

presenting in a graphical user interface a plurality of associable gaming actions, wherein each of the plurality of associable gaming actions comprises one or more substitute gaming stimulations; and

detecting a selection of a first gaming action from the plurality of associable gaming actions.

4. The mouse pad of claim 1 , wherein the proximity sensor comprises one of an electromagnetic sensor, or a capacitive sensor, or an inductive sensor, or an image sensor,

wherein the gaming system is operating from one of the computing device or a server communicatively coupled to the computing device, and

wherein the computing device comprises one of a computer or a gaming console.

5. The mouse pad of claim 1 , wherein the computing device performs operations comprising:

presenting, in a graphical user interface, a plurality of associable gaming actions and a plurality of accessories, wherein each of the plurality of associable gaming actions comprises one or more substitute gaming stimulations, and wherein one of the accessories corresponds to the mouse pad;

receiving a request to associate a gaming action from the plurality of associable actions with the signal; and

recording the association between the signal and the gaming action.

6. The mouse pad of claim 5 , wherein the computing device performs operations further comprising:

receiving the signal;

detecting that the signal is associated with the gaming action;

identifying the one or more substitute gaming stimulations associated with the gaming action according to the gaming venue state;

replacing the signal with the one or more substitute gaming stimulations; and

transmitting to the gaming system the one or more substitute gaming stimulations in place of the signal to cause the change in state of the game.

7. The mouse pad of claim 5 , wherein the one or more substitute gaming stimulations can be generated by one or more accessories other than the mouse pad.

8. The mouse pad of claim 5 , wherein the one or more substitute gaming stimulations depend on a current gaming venue state, and wherein the one or more substitute gaming stimulations define a venue state action for the gaming venue state.

9. The mouse pad of claim 6 , wherein the computing device performs operations further comprising associating recording the association between the signal and the gaming action in one of a plurality of profiles.

10. The mouse pad of claim 9 , wherein the computing device performs operations further comprising associating detecting the association according to information recorded in the profile.

11. The mouse pad of claim 9 , wherein the computing device performs operations further comprising associating the profile with a video game presented by the gaming system.

12. The mouse pad of claim 11 , wherein the computing performs operations comprising:

detecting the video game;

selecting the profile responsive to detecting the video game; and

retrieving the association from the profile.

13. A non-transitory, machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

obtaining a gaming venue state of a game presented by a gaming system;

detecting a computer mouse placed on a top surface of a mouse pad;

detecting removal of the computer mouse from the top surface of the mouse pad exceeding a distance threshold, wherein the distance threshold is associated with one or more substitute gaming stimulations corresponding to a gaming action of the game, and wherein the distance threshold is established based on user-generated input defining a displacement range from the top surface of the mouse pad;

identifying substitute gaming stimulations associated with the gaming action based on a user profile;

generating a signal according to the gaming venue state and the substitute gaming stimulation responsive to the detecting of the removal; and

transmitting the signal to cause a change in a state of the game presented by the gaming system corresponding to the gaming action.

14. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the transmitting of the signal causes a computing device to identify one or more substitute gaming stimulations associated with a gaming action, and

wherein the operations further comprise replacing the signal with the one or more substitute gaming stimulations, and submitting the one or more substitute gaming stimulations to the gaming system in place of the signal to cause the change in state of the game.

15. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the gaming system is operating from a computing device, and wherein the computing device is one of a computer or a gaming console.

16. The non-transitory, machine-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the gaming system is operating from a server communicatively coupled to the computing device.

17. A method, comprising

identifying, by a processor, a current gaming venue state of a video game presented by a gaming system;

providing, by the processor, the current gaming venue state to a mouse pad;

receiving, by the processor, a first signal representative of a displacement of at least a portion of a computer mouse from a surface of the mouse pad exceeding a distance threshold that has been associated with one or more substitute gaming stimulations corresponding to a gaming action, wherein the distance threshold is established based on user- generated input defining a displacement range from the surface of the mouse pad;

responsive to receiving the first signal:

identifying a substitute gaming stimulation of the one or more substitute gaming stimulations associated with the gaming action based on a user profile;

generating, by the processor, a second signal based on the current gaming venue state and the substitute gaming stimulation; and

causing, by the processor, a change in a state of the video game presented by the gaming system according to the second signal to perform the gaming action.

18. The method of claim 17 , comprising:

detecting, from the signal, an angular position of the computer mouse relative to the mouse pad; and

causing the change in the state of the video game according to the detecting.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the signal is generated by a proximity sensor of one of the computer mouse or the mouse pad.

20. The method of claim 17 , comprising:

detecting that the signal is associated with the gaming action; and

causing the change in the state of the video game by transmitting to the gaming system the one or more substitute gaming stimulations in place of the signal according to the current gaming venue state.
