Abstract

A filled large-format imprinted structure includes a cured layer including a cured layer surface having one or more areas and a plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in each area, each of the micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width less than or equal to 20 microns. A rib separates each micro-cavity from an adjacent micro-cavity by a rib width that is less than the micro-cavity width, the rib extending from a bottom of the micro-cavity to the cured layer surface. A common cured material is located in each micro-cavity, thereby defining a filled large-format imprinted structure.

Claims (48)

1 . A filled large-format imprinted structure, comprising:

a cured layer including a cured layer surface having one or more areas;

a plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in each area, each of the micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width less than or equal to 20 microns;

a rib separating each micro-cavity from an adjacent micro-cavity by a rib width that is less than the micro-cavity width, the rib extending from a bottom of the micro-cavity to the cured layer surface; and

a common cured material in each micro-cavity, thereby defining a filled large-format imprinted structure.

2 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein the cured material is a color filter or is black.

3 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein the micro-cavity has a depth that is less than the cured layer thickness or less than 20 microns.

4 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein the cured layer is cross-linked to the cured material.

The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein the cured layer is a first cured layer, the layer surface is a first cured layer surface, the areas are first areas, the ribs are first ribs, the micro-cavities are first micro-cavities, and the common cured material is a first cured material, and further including:

a second cured layer located on the first cured layer surface, on the first ribs, and on the first cured material, the second cured layer having a second layer surface having one or more second areas;

a plurality of second micro-cavities imprinted in each second area, each of the second micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width and a micro-cavity height both less than or equal to 20 microns;

a second rib separating each second micro-cavity from an adjacent second micro-cavity by a rib width, the second rib extending from a bottom of the second micro-cavity to the second layer surface;

a common second cured material in each second micro-cavity; and

wherein the rib width of the second ribs is less than the second micro-cavity width and the second micro-cavity height.

6 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 5 , wherein the first cured material is a color filter having a first color, the second cured material is a color filter having a second color different from the first color, or wherein the second cured material is black.

7 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 5 , wherein the second cured layer includes at least one second micro-cavity having second cured material located above or below a corresponding rib.

8 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 5 , wherein the second cured layer is cross-linked to the first cured layer or the second cured layer is cross-linked to the first cured material.

The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein the cured layer is a first cured layer, the layer surface is a first cured layer surface, the areas are first areas, the micro-cavities are first micro-cavities, and the common cured material is a first cured material, and further including:

a second cured layer located on the first cured layer surface, on the first ribs, and on the first cured material;

one or more second micro-cavities imprinted in the second cured layer, each of the second micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width and a micro-cavity height both less than or equal to 20 microns;

a second cured material in each second micro-cavity; and

wherein the second micro-cavities are located above or below the ribs in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the substrate.

10 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 9 , wherein the second cured layer has a thickness that is different from the thickness of the first cured layer.

11 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 5 , further including:

a third cured layer located on the second cured layer surface, on the second ribs, and on the second cured material, the third cured layer having a third cured layer surface having one or more third areas;

a plurality of third micro-cavities imprinted in each third area, each of the third micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width and a micro-cavity height both less than or equal to 20 microns;

a third rib separating each third micro-cavity from an adjacent third micro-cavity by a rib width, the third rib extending from a bottom of the third micro-cavity to the third layer surface;

a common third cured material in each third micro-cavity; and

wherein the rib width of the third ribs is less than the third micro-cavity width and the third micro-cavity height.

12 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 11 , further including:

a fourth cured layer located on the third cured layer surface, on the third ribs, and on the third cured material, the fourth cured layer having a fourth layer surface having one or more fourth areas;

a plurality of fourth micro-cavities imprinted in each fourth area, each of the fourth micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width and a micro-cavity height both less than or equal to 20 microns;

a fourth rib separating each fourth micro-cavity from an adjacent fourth micro-cavity by a rib width, the fourth rib extending from a bottom of the fourth micro-cavity to the fourth layer surface;

a common fourth cured material in each fourth micro-cavity; and

wherein the rib width of the fourth ribs is less than the fourth micro-cavity width and the fourth micro-cavity height.

13 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 11 , further including:

a fourth cured layer located on the third cured layer surface, on the third ribs, and on the third cured material, the fourth cured layer having a fourth layer surface having one or more fourth areas;

one or more fourth micro-cavities imprinted in the fourth cured layer, each of the fourth micro-cavities having a micro-cavity width and a micro-cavity height both less than or equal to 20 microns;

a fourth cured material in each fourth micro-cavity; and

wherein the fourth micro-cavities are located above or below the first, second, or third ribs in a direction perpendicular to a surface of the substrate.

14 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 13 , wherein the fourth cured material is black.

15 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 11 , wherein the first cured material is a color filter having a first color, the second cured material is a color filter having a second color different from the first color, and the third cured material is a color filter having a third color different from the first or second colors.

16 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 15 , wherein the first color is red, the second color is blue, and the third color is green.

17 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein one of the plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in an area is a different size than another of the plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in the area.

18 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , wherein one of the plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in an area is a different shape than another of the plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in the area.

The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , further including a display located beneath the first cured layer, the display having a pixel located at least partially beneath each of the first, second, and third areas, and the first, second, and third cured materials are color filters having one of the colors red, green, and blue, and the fourth cured material is black.

20 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 1 , further including a display beneath the first cured layer, the display having a pixel located at least partially beneath the first area.

21 . The filled large-format imprinted structure of claim 20 , wherein the pixel has a shape and the plurality of micro-cavities imprinted in an area together have a shape that corresponds to the shape of the pixel.
