DUAL FOCAL PLANE RETICLES FOR OPTICAL SIGHTING DEVICES
A dual focal plane optical sighting device, such as a riflescope, having two reticles, one of which is an electronic reticle. The optical system has an objective lens system, an eyepiece lens, and an erector system, with two focal planes, a first reticle at the first focal plane, and a second reticle at the second focal plane, and at least one of the reticles is an electronic reticle.
1 . An optical sighting device comprising:
a body with a first end and a second end;
an objective lens system disposed within the body;
an eyepiece lens disposed within the body;
an erector lens system disposed within the body; the objective lens system, eyepiece lens, and erector lens system forming an optical system having a first focal plane and a second focal plane, the first focal plane proximate the objective lens system and the second focal plane proximate the eyepiece lens;
a first reticle at the first focal plane; and
a second reticle at the second focal plane, wherein either the first reticle or the second reticle is an electronic reticle.
2 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 wherein the first reticle is a glass reticle and the second reticle is an electronic reticle.
3 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 wherein the first reticle is an electronic reticle and the second reticle is a glass reticle.
4 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 wherein the first reticle has a first pattern and the second reticle has a second pattern.
5 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 further comprising memory for storing multiple reticle patterns for display on the electronic reticle.
6 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 , wherein the electronic reticle includes an OLED.
7 . The optical sighting device of claim 1 , wherein either the first reticle or the second reticle is a wire reticle.
8 . An optical system for a sighting device, the system comprising:
an objective lens system disposed within the body;
an eyepiece lens disposed within the body;
an erector lens system disposed within the body; the objective lens system, eyepiece lens, and erector lens system forming an optical system having a first focal plane and a second focal plane, the first focal plane proximate the objective lens system and the second focal plane proximate the eyepiece lens;
a first reticle at the first focal plane; and
a second reticle at the second focal plane, wherein either the first reticle or the second reticle is an electronic reticle.
9 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 wherein the first reticle is a glass reticle and the second reticle is an electronic reticle.
10 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 wherein the first reticle is an electronic reticle and the second reticle is a glass reticle.
11 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 wherein the first reticle has a first pattern and the second reticle has a second pattern.
12 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 further comprising memory for storing multiple reticle patterns for display on the electronic reticle.
13 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 , wherein the electronic reticle includes an OLED.
14 . The optical sighting device of claim 8 , wherein either the first reticle or the second reticle is a wire reticle.
15 . An optical sighting device adapted to be used with a supersonic bullet and a subsonic bullet, the optical sighting device including an electronic reticle, a controller for causing at least two marking patterns to be displayed on the electronic reticle, the first pattern illustrating angular markings for use with the supersonic bullet, and the second pattern illustrating angular markings for use with the subsonic bullet, the second pattern having greater spacing between the markings than in the first pattern.
16 . An optical sighting device according to claim 13 wherein the optical sighting device further includes a switch connected to the controller for switching between the first and second patterns.
