Abstract

A molded discrete low stress gasket is constructed of restructured filled PTFE for use in corrosive or severe chemical environments under relatively low bolt loads. The gasket has a gasket surface and includes a raised outer sealing ring and a raised inner sealing ring. The gasket may constructed from a restructured filled PTFE material, with the sealing rings deforming at lower pressures than the remaining portions of the gasket.

Claims (12)

1. A molded PTFE gasket, comprising:

a raised sealing ring; and

a rib area adjacent to the raised sealing ring,

wherein the raised sealing ring is formed of restructured full density PTFE that is less dense than a restructured full density PTFE that forms the rib area, the rib area imparting strength and rigidity to the gasket, and the raised sealing ring having high compressibility relative to the rib area.

2. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 1 wherein the restructured full density PTFE of the raised sealing ring and the rib area is filled with microballoons.

3. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 2 wherein the raised sealing ring and the rib area are integrally formed with one another.

4. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 1 , wherein the restructured full density PTFE of the raised sealing ring and the rib area is biaxial restructured full density PTFE.

5. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 1 , wherein the molded PTFE gasket comprises two or more concentrically-aligned raised sealing rings.

6. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 1 , wherein the restructured full density PTFE of the raised sealing ring and the rib area is filled with one or more of barium sulphate, silica, or graphite.

7. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 1 , further comprising one or more supporting rings encapsulated within the molded PTFE gasket.

8. The molded PTFE gasket of claim 7 , wherein a first supporting ring is encapsulated proximate an inner diameter of the molded PTFE gasket and a second supporting ring is encapsulated proximate an outer diameter of the molded PTFE gasket.

9. The molded PTFE gasket sheet of claim 7 , wherein the one or more supporting ring is a perforated stainless steel ring.
