Abstract

Compositions for golf balls that include polyurethane and polyurea linkages and that are crosslinked in the soft segments of the polymer backbone. In particular, the compositions of the invention, which are based on a polyurethane and/or polyurea prepolymers, have improved crosslink density from the crosslinking between the soft, unsaturated segments of the polymer backbone. The curative blend includes at least one isocyanate-reactive component and a free radical initiator.

Claims (19)

1. A method of forming a golf ball comprising a core and a cover, comprising:

providing a golf ball core;

simultaneously reacting an isocyanate-containing component, a first isocyanate-reactive component, and a curative blend to form a reaction product, wherein the first isocyanate-reactive component comprises a conjugated diene hydrocarbon comprising at least two functional groups comprising amino groups, hydroxy groups, or a mixture thereof and the curative blend comprises an amine-terminated component selected from the group consisting of diethylene triamine, propylene-oxide based triamine, dipropylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and mixtures thereof and at least one free radical initiator, wherein the reaction product comprises

crosslinks between (i) the hydrocarbons and (ii) the isocyanate groups and the amino groups; and

forming a golf ball cover about the golf ball core with the reaction product.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the isocyanate-containing component comprises at least two isocyanate groups.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first isocyanate-reactive component comprises amine-terminated polybutadiene.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the amine-terminated polybutadiene comprises primary amino groups at the terminal ends of the polybutadiene.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first isocyanate-reactive component comprises hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene comprises primary hydroxy groups at the terminal ends of the polybutadiene.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one free radical initiator comprises peroxide.

8. A method of forming a golf ball comprising a core and a cover, comprising:

providing a core;

simultaneously reacting an isocyanate-containing component, a first isocyanate-reactive component, and a curative blend to form a reaction product, wherein the first isocyanate-reactive component comprises a conjugated diene hydrocarbon comprising at least one functional amino group and at least one functional hydroxy group and the curative blend comprises an amine-terminated component selected from the group consisting of diethylene triamine, propylene-oxide based triamine, dipropylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, and mixtures thereof and at least one free radical initiator, wherein the reaction product comprises crosslinks between

(i) the hydrocarbons and (ii) the isocyanate groups and the amino groups; and

forming a cover about the core with the reaction product.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the isocyanate-containing component comprises at least two isocyanate groups.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein the conjugated diene hydrocarbon comprises polybutadiene.

11. The method of claim 8 , wherein the at least one free radical initiator comprises peroxide.
