Abstract

A rifle scope includes at least one optical sensor configured to capture optical data corresponding to at least one of a barrel of a firearm and an appendage coupled to the barrel. The rifle scope further includes a controller coupled to the at least one optical sensor and configured to determine an angular position of the barrel in response to capturing the optical data. The controller is configured to automatically determine an alignment of the rifle scope relative to the barrel in response to determining the angular position.

Claims (55)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a firearm scope configured to couple to a firearm including a barrel, the firearm scope including:

an optical sensor configured to capture optical data corresponding to a surface of the barrel; and

a controller communicatively coupled to the optical sensor and configured to automatically determine an alignment of the firearm scope relative to the barrel based on the optical data corresponding to the surface of the barrel.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the firearm scope further includes:

a memory configured to store an external calibration value corresponding to the optical data from a previous determination of the alignment of the firearm scope to the barrel.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the controller determines the alignment by comparing the optical data corresponding to the barrel to the external calibration value to determine a difference.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a lens; and

an actuator coupled to the controller and configured to selectively position the lens between the optical sensor and the barrel to focus light from the barrel toward the optical sensor.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising the firearm including the barrel mechanically coupled to the firearm scope.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a light source configured to provide a focused beam; and

a beam splitter configured to split the focused beam into a first beam directed toward a portion of the barrel and a second beam directed toward the optical sensor, the beam splitter further configured to receive a reflected version of the first beam and to direct the reflected version toward the optical sensor; and

wherein a controller coupled to the optical sensor and configured to compare the reflected beam to an external reference to determine the alignment.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the controller is configured to compare the second beam to an internal reference to detect internal variations based on an offset between the reference beam and the internal reference.

8. An apparatus comprising:

a firearm including a barrel; and

an optical scope coupled to the firearm, the optical scope including:

an optical sensor configured to capture images of a view area of the optical scope and configured to capture optical data corresponding to at least a portion of the barrel; and

a controller coupled to the optical sensor, the controller configured to determine an alignment of the optical scope relative to the firearm based on the optical data corresponding to at least the portion of the barrel.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

a display coupled to the controller; and

wherein the controller selectively provides at least a portion of the images of the view area to the display.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the firearm scope further includes:

a memory configured to store an external calibration value corresponding to the optical data from a previous determination of the alignment of the firearm scope to the barrel; and

wherein the controller determines the alignment by comparing the optical data corresponding to the barrel to the external calibration value to determine a difference.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

a lens; and

an actuator coupled to the controller and configured to selectively position the lens between the optical sensor and the barrel to focus light from the barrel toward the optical sensor.

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , further comprising:

a light source configured to provide a focused beam; and

a beam splitter configured to split the focused beam into a first beam directed toward a portion of the barrel and a second beam directed toward the optical sensor, the beam splitter further configured to receive a reflected version of the first beam and to direct the reflected version toward the optical sensor; and

wherein a controller coupled to the optical sensor and configured to compare the reflected beam to an external reference to determine the alignment.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the controller is configured to compare the second beam to an internal reference to detect internal variations based on an offset between the reference beam and the internal reference.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the optical data comprises an image of an appendage coupled to an external surface of the barrel.

15. A method comprising:

automatically capturing optical data using an optical sensor of a rifle scope coupled to a firearm, the optical data including a portion of a barrel of the firearm;

automatically determining, using a controller coupled to the optical sensor, an alignment of the optical scope relative to the barrel in response to capturing the optical data including the portion of the barrel of the firearm.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein automatically capturing the optical data comprises:

directing a first beam, using a beam splitter of the rifle scope, toward at least one of the barrel and an appendage coupled to an external surface of the barrel;

receiving a reflected version of the first beam at the optical sensor; and

wherein the optical data includes the reflected version.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein automatically determining the alignment comprises:

comparing, using the controller, the reflected version of the first beam to an external reference to determine an external difference; and

determining the alignment based on the external difference.

18. The method of claim 16 , further comprising:

directing a reference beam, using the beam splitter, to the optical sensor; and

comparing, using the controller, the reference beam to an internal reference to determine an internal difference corresponding to a shift of internal components of the rifle scope.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein automatically capturing the optical data comprises:

moving a lens of the rifle scope into a position to focus light from the barrel toward the optical sensor; and

moving the lens to focus light from a view area of the rifle scope toward the optical sensor.

20. The method of claim 14 , wherein automatically capturing optical data comprises receiving, from the portion of the barrel, light emitted by at least one of a light-emitting circuit, a florescent element, a florescent coating, a passive emitter, and a radioactive element.

21. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the optical data comprises an image of a surface of the barrel.

22. The method of claim 15 , wherein the optical data comprises an image of a surface of the barrel.
