AUTOMATIC PROCESSING WITH MULTI-SELECTION INTERFACE
A multi-selection system allows selection of multiple displayed items in a GUI, and processes an underlying data set based on the selection. Users may utilize swipes or concurrent point interactions with the GUI to co-select items. The system identifies actions to perform for selected items based on selection criteria associated with the selected items, or mapping data that maps the selected items to actions. The system automatically identifies grouping criteria for data returned from performed actions and displays resulting groups for further user selection. The system provides suggestive visual highlights that identify commonly co-selected items in the interface. The system collects instrumentation items, for historical usage data, that record aspects of users' interactions with the system. As such, the system may identify, from the historical usage data, sets of commonly co-selected items, mappings between combinations of items and one or more actions, productive arrangements of items displayed in GUIs, etc.
1 . A computer-executed method comprising:
a computing device displaying a plurality of items in a graphical user interface;
the computing device detecting two or more concurrent point-style interactions, each of which targets a respective targeted item of the plurality of items displayed in the graphical user interface;
wherein at least two of the two or more concurrent point-style interactions target at least two discontiguous items of the targeted items, respectively;
in response to detecting the two or more concurrent point-style interactions, causing simultaneous selection of the targeted items;
while the targeted items are selected, performing one or more actions based, at least in part, on the targeted items being selected.
2 . The computer-executed method of claim 1 , further comprising:
storing a plurality of mappings, wherein each mapping of the plurality of mappings maps a distinct combination of items, from the plurality of items, to a corresponding action;
wherein performing the one or more actions comprises:
based on the plurality of mappings, identifying a particular action, of the one or more actions, that is mapped to a combination of the targeted items; and
performing the particular action.
3 . The computer-executed method of claim 1 , further comprising:
prior to performing the one or more actions:
displaying, in the graphical user interface, information that identifies a plurality of actions;
wherein the plurality of actions includes the one or more actions;
receiving information, via the graphical user interface, indicating user selection of the one or more actions from the plurality of actions; and
performing the one or more actions in response to receiving the information indicating user selection of the one or more actions.
4 . The computer-executed method of claim 3 , wherein the plurality of actions are actions that may be performed on data represented by all of the targeted items being selected.
5 . The computer-executed method of claim 1 , wherein:
each item of the targeted items represents one or more selection criteria; and
performing one or more actions based, at least in part, on the targeted items being selected further comprises identifying the one or more actions based, at least in part, on the selection criteria represented by at least one of the targeted items.
6 . The computer-executed method of claim 1 , further comprising:
in response to the two or more concurrent point-style interactions, and prior to performing the one or more actions:
determining a number of the targeted items;
in response to determining that the number of the targeted items is a predetermined number:
identifying, based on historical usage data, one or more additional items that have historically been selected with the targeted items, and
visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface.
7 . The computer-executed method of claim 6 , wherein the predetermined number is one of: four, five, eight, nine, or ten.
8 . The computer-executed method of claim 6 , wherein the targeted items are original targeted items, further comprising:
prior to performing the one or more actions:
the computing device detecting one or more additional point-style interactions, each of which targets an additional targeted item of the plurality of items displayed in the graphical user interface, and
in response to detecting the one or more additional point-style interactions, causing selection of the additional targeted items concurrently with selection of the original targeted items;
wherein performing the one or more actions are further based, at least in part, on the additional targeted items being selected.
9 . The computer-executed method of claim 8 , wherein:
visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface results in one or more highlighted items; and
at least one of the additional targeted items is one of the one or more highlighted items.
10 . The computer-executed method of claim 8 , wherein:
visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface results in one or more highlighted items; and
the method further comprises: in connection with visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface, the computing device deactivating graphical user interface controls associated with those items, of the plurality of items, that are not highlighted items.
11 . The computer-executed method of claim 1 , further comprising recording, in historical usage data, usage information about the targeted items.
12 . One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause performance of:
a computing device displaying a plurality of items in a graphical user interface;
the computing device detecting two or more concurrent point-style interactions, each of which targets a respective targeted item of the plurality of items displayed in the graphical user interface;
wherein at least two of the two or more concurrent point-style interactions target at least two discontiguous items of the targeted items, respectively;
in response to detecting the two or more concurrent point-style interactions, causing simultaneous selection of the targeted items;
while the targeted items are selected, performing one or more actions based, at least in part, on the targeted items being selected.
13 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , further comprising instructions for:
storing a plurality of mappings, wherein each mapping of the plurality of mappings maps a distinct combination of items, from the plurality of items, to a corresponding action;
wherein performing the one or more actions comprises:
based on the plurality of mappings, identifying a particular action, of the one or more actions, that is mapped to a combination of the targeted items; and
performing the particular action.
14 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , further comprising instructions for:
prior to performing the one or more actions:
displaying, in the graphical user interface, information that identifies a plurality of actions;
wherein the plurality of actions includes the one or more actions;
receiving information, via the graphical user interface, indicating user selection of the one or more actions from the plurality of actions; and
performing the one or more actions in response to receiving the information indicating user selection of the one or more actions.
15 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein the plurality of actions are actions that may be performed on data represented by all of the targeted items being selected.
16 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein:
each item of the targeted items represents one or more selection criteria; and
performing one or more actions based, at least in part, on the targeted items being selected further comprises identifying the one or more actions based, at least in part, on the selection criteria represented by at least one of the targeted items.
17 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , further comprising instructions for:
in response to the two or more concurrent point-style interactions, and prior to performing the one or more actions:
determining a number of the targeted items;
in response to determining that the number of the targeted items is a predetermined number:
identifying, based on historical usage data, one or more additional items that have historically been selected with the targeted items, and
visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface.
18 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the predetermined number is one of: four, five, eight, nine, or ten.
19 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 17 , wherein the targeted items are original targeted items, further comprising instructions for:
prior to performing the one or more actions:
the computing device detecting one or more additional point-style interactions, each of which targets an additional targeted item of the plurality of items displayed in the graphical user interface, and
in response to detecting the one or more additional point-style interactions, causing selection of the additional targeted items concurrently with selection of the original targeted items;
wherein performing the one or more actions are further based, at least in part, on the additional targeted items being selected.
20 . The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 19 , wherein:
visually highlighting the one or more additional items in the graphical user interface results in one or more highlighted items; and
at least one of the additional targeted items is one of the one or more highlighted items.
