Abstract

Methods for changing a strip of sealed bag precursors in to open bags are disclosed. The apparatus used in the method is referred to as a transforming machine and includes a separation station and may include a perforation station and a piercing station. The perforation station forms a plurality of end perforations in the multiple layers of a strip of sealed bag precursors. The separation station separates the plurality of end perforations in at least one film layer of the trip to form a plurality of bag openings. The plurality of end perforation are torn by the separation station, which includes manipulating the rotation of a main roller, a pressure roller and at least one separation roller.

Claims (14)

1. A method for tearing an end perforation in a bag strip to create a bag opening, comprising:

providing a separation station comprising:

a main drive roller;

a pressure device positioned to squeeze a continuous strip of bag precursors against the main drive roller; and

a separation roller positioned to squeeze the continuous strip of bag precursors against the main drive roller;

inserting the continuous strip of bag precursors into the separation station;

rotating the main drive roller to move a bag strip through the separation station;

squeezing the bag strip between the pressure device and the main drive roller by activating the pressure device to stop travel of the bag strip while simultaneously disengaging the driving of the main drive roller and allowing the separation roller to continue to rotate, which tears apart existing end perforations in only a first film layer of the bag strip to create a bag opening, thereby forming a continuous strip of open bags.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising locating the end perforation between the pressure device and the separation roller before disengaging the driving of the main drive roller and activating the pressure device.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the separation station includes a clutch operatively coupled to the main drive roller.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising providing a drive device for rotating the main drive roller; wherein the drive device is further operatively coupled to rotate the separation roller.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising dispensing the continuous strip of open bags into a bag filling machine in a continuous process.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming, using a perforation station positioned upstream of the separation station, a plurality of end perforations in a first film layer and a second film layer of each bag precursor.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein forming the plurality of end perforations includes momentarily stopping the inserting of the continuous strip of bag precursors while the plurality of perforations are formed.
