Abstract

A brake hub assembly couplable to the axle of a vehicle includes a brake hub defining a central axis and having a set of lugs, a brake disk in engagement with the hub and axially slideable over the set of lugs, and a stopping plate formed separately from the hub and fastened to the set of lugs. A first portion of the stopping plate extends between adjacent first and second lugs in the set of lugs. The brake hub assembly also includes an axial preload spring coupled to the hub for clamping the brake disk against the stopping plate. A first portion of the axial preload spring extending between the first and second lugs biases the brake disk toward the first portion of the stopping plate.

Claims (25)

1. A brake hub assembly couplable to the axle of a vehicle, the brake hub assembly comprising:

a brake hub defining a central axis, the hub having a set of lugs each including an outboard surface, an opposite inboard surface, and an aperture extending between the outboard surface and the inboard surface;

a brake disk in engagement with the hub and axially slideable over the set of lugs;

a stopping plate formed separately from the hub and fastened to the set of lugs in abutting relationship with one of the outboard surface or the inboard surface by fasteners extending through the apertures in the lugs, a first portion of the stopping plate extending between adjacent first and second lugs in the set of lugs; and

an axial preload spring fastened to the set of lugs in abutting relationship with the other of the outboard surface or the inboard surface by the fasteners extending through the apertures in the lugs for clamping the brake disk against the stopping plate, wherein a first portion of the axial preload spring extending between the first and second lugs biases the brake disk toward the first portion of the stopping plate without transferring torque between the brake hub and the brake disk.

2. The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , wherein the stopping plate is substantially semi-annular in shape.

3. The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , wherein the axial preload spring is substantially “C” shaped.

4. The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a wheel flange plate to which a wheel is securable, wherein the wheel flange plate is removably coupled to the brake hub.

5. The brake hub assembly of claim 4 , wherein the set of lugs is a second of two sets of lugs on the brake hub, and wherein the brake hub includes a first set of lugs axially spaced from the second set of lugs.

The brake hub assembly of claim 5 , wherein the wheel flange plate is removably coupled to the first set of lugs and the brake disk is removably coupled to the second set of lugs, wherein the second set of lugs is proximate an inboard end of the brake hub, and wherein the first set of lugs is between the second set of lugs and an outboard end of the brake hub.

7. The brake hub assembly of claim 6 , wherein the wheel flange plate is fastened to an outboard end of each of the first set of lugs.

8. The brake hub assembly of claim 6 , wherein at least one of the first set of lugs and the second set of lugs are integrally formed with the brake hub.

The brake hub assembly of claim 6 , wherein the wheel flange plate includes a wall along an inner circumference of the plate, and wherein the wall defines a plurality of hub pilots at a first radial distance from the central axis and a plurality of wheel pilots at a second radial distance from the central axis, the second radial distance greater than the first radial distance.

10. The brake hub assembly of claim 6 , wherein the wheel flange plate is removeably coupled to the first set of lugs with a first set of fasteners, and wherein the brake disk is removeably coupled to the second set of lugs with a second set of fasteners.

11. The brake hub assembly of claim 10 , wherein each of the wheel flange plate and the brake disk is removable from the brake hub without removing the brake hub from the axle.

12. The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , wherein the brake disk defines a plurality of slots and wherein each lug of the set of lugs is sized to pass axially through one of the plurality of slots.

13. The brake hub assembly of claim 12 , wherein each lug of the set of lugs is received within and moveable radially along the respective slots in the brake disk.

14. The brake hub assembly of claim 12 , wherein the axial preload spring includes a plurality of apertures parallel to the central axis, and wherein the apertures in the set of lugs are aligned with the apertures in the axial preload spring.

15. The brake hub assembly of claim 14 , wherein the stopping plate includes a plurality of apertures aligned with the apertures in the axial preload spring and the set of lugs, respectively.

16. The brake hub assembly of claim 15 , wherein the fasteners extend through the aligned apertures in the axial preload spring, the set of lugs, and the stopping plate for clamping the axial preload spring and the stopping plate to the set of lugs.

17. The brake hub assembly of claim 16 , wherein the first portion of the axial preload spring is located between adjacent apertures in the axial preload spring.

18. The brake hub assembly of claim 17 , wherein the axial preload spring extends 360 degrees about the central axis.

19. The brake hub assembly of claim 16 , wherein the first portion of the stopping plate is located between adjacent apertures in the stopping plate.

20. The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , wherein the stopping plate is a first of two stopping plates fastened to the set of lugs, and wherein each stopping plate extends approximately 180 degrees about the central axis.

The brake hub assembly of claim 1 , wherein the axial preload spring includes adjacent base portions fastened to the first and second lugs of the brake hub, respectively, through apertures in the respective base portions, wherein the first portion of the axial preload spring extends between the adjacent base portions and clamps the brake disk against the stopping plate, and wherein the apertures in the axial preload spring are only positioned in the respective base portions.
