Abstract

The disclosure includes a method for locating an individual or an object with respect to a building and activating an asset associated with the building based upon the individual or the object's location. The method includes using a Global Positioning System or a cellular triangulation system to generate a position fix of the individual or object. If the position fix is within a predetermined distance of the building, the method further includes activating an asset associated with the building.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein activating an asset associated with the building occurs in response to the probability being greater than or equal to a predetermined probability.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the predetermined probability is equal to 60%.

6 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising:

after generating the second position fix, using the Global Positioning System or the cellular triangulation system to generate a third position fix of the individual or object, wherein the third position fix is generated at a second time of day, and wherein the second position fix and the third position fix define an updated travel route and an updated direction of travel;

determining an updated probability that the individual or object is en route to the building, wherein the updated probability depends upon at least one of: 1) a distance of the third position fix from the building, 2) the updated travel route, 3) the updated direction of travel, and 4) the second time of day; and

determining whether the updated probability is less than or equal to a second predetermined probability.

7 . The method of claim 6 , in response to determining that the updated probability is less than or equal to the second predetermined probability, the method further comprising deactivating the asset associated with the building.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the second predetermined probability is equal to 30%.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the asset is: 1) a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, 2) a lighting system, or 3) an entertainment system.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the asset is a high-energy asset and the predetermined distance is a first predetermined distance, the method further comprising:

after generating the second position fix, using the Global Positioning System or the cellular triangulation system to generate a third position fix of the individual or object;

determining whether the second position fix or the third position fix is a greater distance from the building; and

in response to: 1) determining that the second position fix or the third position fix is within the second predetermined distance of the building and 2) determining that the second position fix is a greater distance from the building than the third position fix, activating a low-energy asset associated with the building.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the high energy asset is a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, and wherein the low energy asset is a lighting system or an entertainment system.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first predetermined distance is 5 miles and the second predetermined distance is 100 feet.

13 . A method for locating a first individual or an object with respect to a building and activating an asset associated with the building based upon the first individual or the object's location, the method comprising:

using a Global Positioning System or a cellular triangulation system to generate a current position fix of the first individual or object;

determining whether the current position fix is within a predetermined distance of the building;

determining whether a second individual is located at the building; and

in response to: 1) determining that the current position fix is within the predetermined distance of the building and 2) determining that a second individual is not located at the building, activating an asset associated with the building.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein in response to: 1) determining that the current position fix is within the predetermined distance of the building and 2) determining that the second individual is located at the building, taking no action to activate or deactivate the asset associated with the building.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the current position fix is a first position fix, the method further comprising:

after generating the first position fix, using the Global Positioning System or the cellular triangulation system to generate a second position fix of the first individual or object;

determining whether the first position fix or the second position fix is within a predetermined distance of the building;

determining whether the first position fix or the second position fix is a greater distance from the building;

in response to: 1) determining that the first position fix or the second position fix is within the predetermined distance of the building, 2) determining that the first position fix is a greater distance from the building than the second position fix, and 3) determining that the second individual is not located at the building, activating the asset associated with the building; and

in response to: 1) determining that the first position fix or the second position fix is within the predetermined distance of the building, 2) determining that the second position fix is a greater distance from the building than the first position fix, and 3) determining that the second individual is not located at the building, deactivating the asset associated with the building.
