Abstract

Methods and apparatus for controlling a light fixture having at least one adjustable attribute are described. In one embodiment, a light fixture having at least one adjustable attribute comprises a housing, a light source disposed within the housing, a cover secured to the housing that allows at least some light from the light source to pass, a light control circuit, coupled to the light source and disposed within the housing, for detecting a state change of a switch and for providing a control signal for varying an attribute of the light fixture, and the switch, coupled to the light control circuit and disposed within the housing, comprising contacts that are opened and closed in response to a non-mechanical stimulus external to the housing.

Claims (34)

1. An adjustable light fixture, comprising:

a housing;

a light source disposed within the housing;

a cover secured to the housing that allows at least some light from the light source to pass;

a switch disposed within the housing comprising contacts that are opened and closed in response to a non-mechanical stimulus external to the housing; and

a light control circuit, coupled to the light source and the switch, for detecting a state change of the switch and for providing a control signal in response thereto for continuously varying an attribute of the light generated by the light source as the switch is held in a first position by the non-mechanical stimulus.

2. The adjustable light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the switch comprises a reed switch and the external stimulus comprises a magnetic field.

3. The adjustable light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the light control circuit maintains a first light intensity of the light source at an intensity achieved at the time that the non-mechanical stimulus is removed from the housing.

4. The adjustable light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the light control circuit begins varying the light intensity only after a predetermined time period after the state change has been detected.

5. The adjustable light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the continuously attribute comprises a cyclical repetition of a first time period of increasing light intensity followed by a second time period of decreasing light intensity.

The adjustable light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the light control circuit changes the light intensity from a first intensity to a second intensity upon detection of the switch changing state from a first state to a second state and back to the first state.

7. The adjustable light fixture of claim 6 , wherein the light control circuit changes the light intensity from the first intensity to the second intensity only if the switch changes state from the first state to the second state and back to the first state within a predetermined time period.

8. An adjustable light fixture, comprising:

a housing;

a light source disposed within the housing;

a cover secured to the housing that allows at least some light from the light source to pass;

a switch disposed within the housing comprising contacts that are opened and closed in response to a non-mechanical stimulus external to the housing; and

a light control circuit, coupled to the light source and the switch, for detecting a state change of the switch from a first state to a second state and back to the first state and for providing a control signal in response thereto for varying an attribute of the light generated by the light source.

The adjustable light fixture of claim 8 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the light control circuit varies the light intensity from a first predetermined intensity to a second predetermined intensity in response to detecting the state change of the switch from the first state to the second state and back to the first state.

10. The adjustable light fixture of claim 8 , wherein the light control circuit changes the attribute only if the switch changes state from the first state to the second state and back to the first state within a predetermined time period.

The adjustable light fixture of claim 8 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the light control circuit detects a second state change of the switch from the first state to the second state and for providing a second control signal in response thereto for continuously varying the intensity of the light source as the switch is held in the second state by the non-mechanical stimulus.

12. The adjustable light fixture of claim 11 , wherein the light control circuit begins continuously varying the intensity of the light source when the second state is maintained for more than a predetermined time period.

13. The adjustable light fixture of claim 11 , wherein the light control circuit maintains the attribute at an attribute level achieved at the time that the switch changes back to the first state in response to the non-mechanical stimulus being removed from the housing.

14. An adjustable light fixture, comprising:

a housing;

a light source disposed within the housing;

a cover secured to the housing that allows at least some light from the light source to pass;

a switch disposed within the housing comprising contacts that are opened and closed in response to a non-mechanical stimulus external to the housing; and

means, coupled to the light source and the switch, for controlling an attribute of the light by detecting a state change of the switch and for providing a control signal in response thereto for continuously varying an attribute of the light generated by the light source as the switch is held in a first position by the non-mechanical stimulus.

15. The adjustable light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the means for controlling the attribute maintains a first light intensity of the light source at an intensity achieved at the time that the non-mechanical stimulus is removed from the housing.

16. The adjustable light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the means for controlling the attribute begins varying the light intensity only after a predetermined time period after the state change has been detected.

17. The adjustable light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the continuously attribute comprises a cyclical repetition of a first time period of increasing light intensity followed by a second time period of decreasing light intensity.

The adjustable light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the attribute comprises a light intensity and the means for controlling the attribute changes the light intensity from a first intensity to a second intensity upon detection of the switch changing state from a first state to a second state and back to the first state.

The adjustable light fixture of claim 18 , wherein the means for controlling the attribute changes the light intensity from the first intensity to the second intensity only if the switch changes state from the first state to the second state and back to the first state within a predetermined time period.
