Expandable fusion device and method of installation thereof
An expandable fusion device is capable of being installed inside an intervertebral disc space to maintain normal disc spacing and restore spinal stability, thereby facilitating an intervertebral fusion. The fusion device may include a body portion, a first endplate, and a second endplate, the first and second endplates capable of being moved in a direction away from the body portion into an expanded configuration or capable of being moved towards the body portion into an unexpanded configuration. The fusion device is capable of being deployed and installed in both configurations.
1. An expandable device comprising:
a first endplate defining a first opening;
a second endplate defining a second opening;
a translation member positioned in between the first endplate and second endplate, wherein the translation member includes a first ramp and a second ramp, wherein each of the first ramp and the second ramp contact the first endplate, wherein movement of the translation member causes the first endplate and the second endplate to extend distally away from the translation member;
an actuator in direct contact with the translation member; and
a first stabilization member in direct contact with the translation member, wherein the first stabilization member is threaded and engages one or more mateable threads of the translation member,
wherein the actuator moves independently of the stabilization member.
2. The device of claim 1 , comprising a second stabilization member, wherein the first and second stabilization members are not in direct contact with one another.
3. The device of claim 2 , wherein the first stabilization member and the second stabilization member are each positioned adjacent a first end of the translation member.
4. The device of claim 2 , wherein the first and second stabilization members are positioned adjacent to an anterior portion of the translation member.
5. The device of claim 1 , wherein the translation member includes at least three angled ramped surfaces.
6. The device of claim 5 , wherein the first endplate includes a plurality of angled grooves that correspond with the three angled ramped surfaces to support expansion and contraction of the fusion device.
7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first endplate is made from a polymeric material.
8. The device of claim 7 , wherein the polymeric material is PEEK.
9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the translation member extends along at least a length of the first endplate and the second endplate.
10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the translation member is made from titanium.
11. An expandable device comprising:
a first endplate;
a second endplate;
a translation member positioned in between the first endplate and second endplate, wherein the translation member includes a first ramp and a second ramp, wherein each of the first ramp and the second ramp contact the first endplate, wherein movement of the translation member causes the first endplate and the second endplate to extend distally away from the translation member;
a threaded set screw that is configured to extend through a wall of the translation member;
a blocking nut attachable to the set screw; and
a first stabilization member coupled to the translation member, wherein the first stabilization member is threaded and engages one or more mateable threads of the translation member,
wherein the threaded set screw moves independently of the stabilization member.
12. The device of claim 11 further comprising at least two stabilization members in direct contact with the translation member.
13. The device of claim 12 , further comprising a body portion, wherein the at least two stabilizing members are both positioned on the translation member to prevent rocking of the body portion during expansion and contraction of the device.
14. The device of claim 12 , wherein the translation member extends along at least a length of the first endplate and the second endplate, and the at least two stabilizing members are positioned through the translation member.
15. The device of claim 11 , wherein the first endplate includes a textured outer surface for contacting a vertebral body.
16. The device of claim 11 , wherein the set screw is accompanied by a flange member that assists in maintaining expansion of the expandable device.
17. The device of claim 11 , wherein the translation member includes at least three ramped surfaces.
18. The device of claim 17 , wherein the first endplate includes grooves that correspond with the three ramped surfaces.
