Abstract

A media recording element having capabilities to facilitate recording media for subsequent playback. The recording element further including features associated with limited operations of a hard drive of other similarly mechanical memory under certain operating conditions so as to limit power consumption and/or memory degradation.

Claims (46)

1. A method comprising:

causing, by a computing device, storage of first content from a media content stream to a mechanically operational memory;

in response to determining, based on a size of at least a portion of a solid-state memory, to store second content from the media content stream to the solid-state memory:

diverting the media content stream from the mechanically operational memory to the solid-state memory;

causing storage of the second content from the media content stream to the solid-state memory;

deactivating at least one portion of the mechanically operational memory; and

subsequent to the deactivation of the at least one portion of the mechanically operational memory, causing output, from the solid-state memory, of the second content from the media content stream; and

subsequent to the causing output:

reactivating the deactivated at least one portion of the mechanically operational memory.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing storage of the second content from the media content stream to the mechanically operational memory and to the solid-state memory simultaneously.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein deactivating at least one portion of the mechanically operational memory comprises deactivating a read element of the mechanically operational memory.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the computing device, a plurality of media content streams; and

partitioning the solid-state memory based on a number of the plurality of media content streams that are received by the computing device.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

causing output of the second content from the media content stream in response to a recording event.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content stream comprises internet protocol (IP) based media content.

7. A method comprising:

causing, by a computing device, storage of first content from a plurality of different media content streams to an allocated plurality of portions of a mechanically operational memory; and

in response to determining, based on a size of at least a portion of a solid-state memory, to store second content from one media content stream of the plurality of different media content streams to the solid-state memory:

causing storage of the second content from the one media content stream of the plurality of different media content streams to the solid-state memory;

deactivating a portion of the plurality of allocated portions of the mechanically operational memory; and

causing output, from the solid-state memory, of the second content.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

reactivating the deactivated portion of the mechanically operational memory.

9. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

causing storage of the second content from the one media content stream to the mechanically operational memory in response to a recording operation.

10. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

partitioning the solid-state memory based on a number of the plurality of different media content streams that are received by the computing device.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the one media content stream comprises internet protocol (IP) based media content.

12. The method of claim 7 , wherein the computing device simultaneously records and displays the second content from the one media content stream.

13. A method comprising:

in response to determining, based on a size of at least a portion of a solid-state memory, to store first content from a media content stream to the solid-state memory:

causing, by a computing device, storage of the first content from the media content stream to the solid-state memory;

deactivating at least one portion of a first memory, wherein the first memory is different from the solid-state memory;

causing output, from the solid-state memory, of the first content from the media content stream; and

subsequent to the causing output:

reactivating the deactivated at least one portion of the first memory.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

causing storage of a first portion of the first content from the media content stream in the solid-state memory; and

causing storage of a second portion of the first content from the media content stream in the first memory.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising partitioning the solid-state memory based on a number of a plurality of media content streams that are received by the computing device.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the media content stream comprises internet protocol (IP) based media content.

17. The method of claim 13 , further comprising:

causing output of a portion of the first content from the media content stream from the first memory.
