Abstract

An apparatus includes a housing, a fluid reservoir, a flow control mechanism, and an actuator. The housing defines an inner volume and has an inlet port that can be fluidically coupled to a patient and an outlet port. The fluid reservoir is disposed in the inner volume to receive and isolate a first volume of a bodily-fluid. The flow control mechanism is rotatable in the housing from a first configuration, in which a first lumen places the inlet port is in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir, and a second configuration, in which a second lumen places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port. The actuator is configured to create a negative pressure in the fluid reservoir and is configured to rotate the flow control mechanism from the first configuration to the second configuration after the first volume of bodily-fluid is received in the fluid reservoir.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the seal member is a plunger configured to form a substantially fluidic seal with an inner surface of at least one of the actuator and the housing.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the fluid reservoir has a first volume when the seal member is in the first position and a second volume greater than the first volume when the seal member is in the second position, the increase in volume from the first volume to the second volume operable in forming the negative pressure.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the flow control mechanism fluidically isolates the fluid reservoir from the first fluid flow path and the second fluid flow path when the flow control mechanism is in the second configuration.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the flow control mechanism fluidically isolates the first fluid flow path from the inlet port and the outlet port when the flow control mechanism is in the second configuration.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to move in a first direction to form the negative pressure in the fluid reservoir, and further configured to move in a second direction opposite the first direction to reduce the negative pressure in the fluid reservoir.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to transition the flow control mechanism to the second configuration when the seal member is placed in the second position.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to move in response to an activation force, a magnitude of the negative pressure in the fluid reservoir corresponding to a magnitude of the activation force such that an increase in the magnitude of the activation force results in an increase in the magnitude of the negative pressure and a decrease in the magnitude of the activation force results in a decrease in the magnitude of the negative pressure.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the actuator is configured to move the seal member from the first position toward the second position in response to an activation force, the device further comprising:

a bias member operably coupled to the actuator, the bias member configured to exert a reaction force on a portion of the actuator in response to the activation force, the reaction force operable to move the actuator toward the first position when at least a portion of the activation force is removed.

10. A device for procuring bodily-fluid samples from a patient, the device comprising:

a housing including a proximal end portion and a distal end portion and defining an inner volume therebetween, the housing having an inlet port configured to be fluidically coupled to the patient and an outlet port configured to be fluidically coupled to a sample reservoir;

a fluid reservoir disposed in the inner volume and configured to receive and isolate a first amount of bodily-fluid withdrawn from the patient;

a flow control mechanism defining a first fluid flow path and a second fluid flow path, the flow control mechanism configured to be transitioned from a first configuration, in which the first fluid flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the fluid reservoir, and a second configuration, in which the second fluid flow path places the inlet port in fluid communication with the outlet port; and

an actuator operably coupled to the flow control mechanism and defining at least a portion of the fluid reservoir, the actuator configured to be moved relative to the housing from a first position, in which the fluid reservoir has a first volume, toward a second position, in which the fluid reservoir has a second volume greater than the first volume,

the actuator configured to be moved a first distance from the first position toward the second position when actuated by a user to allow the bodily-fluid to flow from the inlet port, through the first fluid flow path and to the fluid reservoir,

the actuator further configured to be moved a second distance to the second position when actuated by the user, the actuator being operable to transition the flow control mechanism from its first configuration to its second configuration when the actuator is placed in its second position.

11. The device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator is configured to automatically transition the flow control mechanism from its first configuration to its second configuration after a predetermined volume of bodily-fluid has been received in the fluid reservoir.

12. The device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator is moved in a linear motion relative to the housing from the first position to the second position, the actuator operable to rotate the flow control mechanism relative to a portion of the housing from the first configuration to the second configuration.

13. The device of claim 10 , wherein the actuator includes a seal member and the seal member defines a portion of the fluid reservoir.

14. The device of claim 10 , wherein the flow control mechanism is disposed in a third configuration prior to the actuator being moved from the first position, the first fluid flow path and the second fluid flow path each being fluidically isolated from the inlet port, the fluid reservoir, and the outlet port when the flow control mechanism is in the third configuration.
