Abstract

A blade configured for use in a blending apparatus includes a body portion and a pair of wing portions extending from the body portion. At least a leading edge of the blade is forged to increase a hardness property. The leading edge may have a minimum thickness that provides a relatively blunt leading edge. The wing portions of the blade may be formed after forging the blade.

Claims (18)

1. A method of forming a blade for use in a blending apparatus, the method comprising;

providing an elongate planar piece of metal material having top and bottom surfaces and a thickness measured between the top and bottom surfaces;

forging the piece of metal material to define a beveled surface and a trailing edge, the beveled surface comprising a leading edge and a rear edge, the leading and trailing edges being blunt, the rear and leading edges being parallel to each other, the leading edge being formed opposite the trailing edge on the piece of metal, the bottom surface adjoining the rear edge, the bottom surface being oriented perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the blade.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising bending the piece of metal material to form first and second wings at opposing ends of the piece of metal material.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing excess metal material from the leading edge after forging.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a pass-through aperture at a midpoint along a length of the piece of metal material, the pass-through aperture defining the axis of rotation.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a thickness of the leading edge to be at least 5% of the thickness of the piece of metal material.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a thickness of the leading edge to be at least 0.005 inches.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein forging includes forming the beveled surface along opposing side edges of the piece of metal material.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein forging creates a variable hardness through a thickness of the piece of metal material, a greatest hardness being provided at the leading edge.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forged piece of material includes a core having a greater flexibility than an outer surface of the piece of material, the core providing greater resistance to fatigue cracking in the blade.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the leading edge is forged with a greater hardness than the trailing edge.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the beveled surface is forged with a greater hardness than a core of the piece of metal material.

12. A method of forming a blade for use in a blending apparatus, the method comprising;

providing an elongate planar piece of metal material having a top surface, a bottom surface, and a blade thickness measured between the top and bottom surfaces, the bottom surface being oriented perpendicular to an axis of rotation of the blade;

forging the piece of metal material to define a leading face and a beveled surface, the beveled surface having a length, the beveled surface having a leading edge and a rear edge, the leading and rear edges extending parallel to the length, the rear edge adjoining the bottom surface, the leading edge adjoining the leading face, the leading face having a leading face height, the leading face height being less than the blade thickness.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the leading face is oriented at about a 90-degree angle relative to the bottom surface of the piece of metal material.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the leading face is forged having a greater hardness than a core of the piece of metal material.
