Abstract

Wireless energy transfer methods and designs for implantable electronics and devices include, in at least one aspect, a device resonator configured to be included in an implantable medical device and supply power for a load of the implantable medical device by receiving wirelessly transferred power from a source resonator coupled with a power source; temperature sensors positioned to measure temperatures of the device resonator at different locations; a tunable component coupled to the device resonator; and control circuitry configured and arranged to adjust the tunable component to detune the device resonator in response to a measurement from at least one of the temperature sensors.

Claims (29)

1. A wireless energy transfer system for an implantable medical device comprising:

a device resonator configured to be included in the implantable medical device and supply power for a load of the implantable medical device by receiving wirelessly transferred power from a source resonator coupled with a power source;

temperature sensors positioned to measure temperatures of the device resonator at different locations;

a tunable component coupled to the device resonator; and

control circuitry configured and arranged to adjust the tunable component to detune the device resonator in response to measurements from the temperature sensors;

wherein the device resonator comprises a magnetic material with inhomogeneous flux distribution, and the temperature sensors are positioned to measure localized heating resulting from the inhomogeneous flux distribution or power dissipation in the device resonator.

2. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the device resonator is detuned by 1% or more.

3. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the device resonator is detuned in increments of 1 kHz or more.

4. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the device resonator is detuned incrementally until the temperature of the device resonator stabilizes.

5. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to continuously monitor temperatures of components of the device resonator and trends of the temperatures of the components, and adjust one or more frequencies and values of the tunable component to stabilize the temperature of the device resonator.

6. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 5 , wherein the components comprise at least one inductor and at least one capacitor of the tunable component.

7. The wireless energy transfer system of claim 1 , wherein the magnetic material comprises pieces of magnetic material, and the inhomogeneous flux distribution results from one or more gaps between the pieces of magnetic material.

8. A system comprising:

an implantable medical device having a load;

a single device resonator coupled with the implantable medical device to supply power to the load by receiving wirelessly transferred power from a source resonator coupled with a power source;

temperature sensors positioned to measure temperatures of the single device resonator at different locations surrounding the single device resonator;

a tunable component coupled to the single device resonator; and

control circuitry configured and arranged to adjust the tunable component to detune the single device resonator in response to measurements from the temperature sensors;

wherein the single device resonator comprises a magnetic material with inhomogeneous flux distribution, and the temperature sensors are positioned to measure localized heating resulting from the inhomogeneous flux distribution.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the single device resonator is detuned by 1% or more.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the single device resonator is detuned in increments of 1 kHz or more.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the single device resonator is detuned incrementally until the temperature of the single device resonator stabilizes.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to continuously monitor temperatures of components of the single device resonator and trends of the temperatures of the components, and adjust one or more frequencies and values of the tunable component to stabilize the temperature of the single device resonator.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the components comprise at least one inductor and at least one capacitor of the tunable component.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein the magnetic material comprises pieces of magnetic material, and the inhomogeneous flux distribution results from one or more gaps between the pieces of magnetic material.

15. The system of claim 8 , comprising a rechargeable battery, wherein the single device resonator is coupled with the implantable medical device and supplies power to the load through the rechargeable battery.

16. The system of claim 8 , wherein the implantable medical device comprises a mechanical circulatory support device.

17. The system of claim 8 , wherein the implantable medical device comprises a ventricular assist device.

18. The system of claim 8 , wherein the implantable medical device comprises a cardioverter defibrillator.
