Abstract

The light fixture includes a frame configured to define a first channel, and a substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel disposed within the frame. Power circuitry is disposed within the first channel, the power circuitry being configured to electrically couple the substantially flat LED panel to an external AC power supply. The power circuitry is sized to be positioned within the first channel and has a length and a width, the length-to-width ratio being at least 5 to 1, and optionally at least 10 to 1. The power circuitry is configured to convert an AC input into a DC output suitable for powering the substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel. The substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel includes an optically transmissive panel, and an array of LEDs disposed adjacent to an edge of the optically transmissive panel and disposed adjacent at least one edge of the frame.

Claims (36)

1. A light fixture comprising:

a frame configured to define a first channel;

a substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel disposed within the frame; and

drivers disposed within the first channel, each driver being configured to electrically couple the substantially flat LED panel to an external AC power supply wherein the drivers are sized to be positioned entirely within the first channel and has a length and a width, wherein the length-to-width ratio is at least 5 to 1.

2. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the drivers are configured to convert an AC input into a DC output suitable for powering the substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel.

3. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel includes an array of LEDs disposed adjacent at least one edge of the frame.

4. The light fixture of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the frame defines a second channel configured to support the array of LEDs.

5. The light fixture of claim 3 , wherein the substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel includes an optically transmissive panel, and the array of LEDs is disposed adjacent to an edge of the optically transmissive panel.

6. The light fixture of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the frame is configured to support electrical connectors between each driver and the respective array of LEDs.

7. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the length-to-width ratio of the drivers are at least 10 to 1.

8. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the drivers are housed within the frame at an edge of the frame.

9. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the first channel is configured to support the drivers.

10. The light fixture of claim 9 , wherein the drivers include an array of circuit modules supported by the first channel.

11. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the first channel has a height of no more than about 1.0 inches.

12. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the first channel has a width of no more than about 0.5 inches.

13. The light fixture of claim 1 , wherein the drivers include space-sensitive components oriented along a long direction of the drivers.

14. A light fixture comprising:

a frame;

a substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel disposed within the frame, the substantially flat LED panel including an array of LEDs disposed adjacent at least one edge of the frame; and

drivers are housed entirely within the frame at an edge of the frame, the drivers being configured to electrically couple the substantially flat LED panel to an external power supply; wherein the drivers have a length and a width, wherein the length-to-width ratio is at least 5 to 1.

15. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the drivers are configured to convert an AC input into a DC output suitable for powering the array of LEDs.

16. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the drivers are sized to be positioned entirely within a channel defined by the frame.

17. The light fixture of claim 16 , wherein the frame defines a second channel configured to support the array of LEDs.

18. The light fixture of claim 17 , wherein at least a portion of the frame is configured to support electrical connectors between each driver and the respective array of LEDs.

19. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the length-to-width ratio of the drivers are at least 10 to 1.

20. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the frame of the light fixture has a thickness of no more than about 1.0 inches.

21. The light fixture of claim 14 , wherein the frame of the light fixture has a thickness of no more than about 0.5 inches.

22. A light fixture comprising:

a frame configured to define a channel;

a substantially flat light emitting diode (LED) panel disposed within the frame; and

drivers disposed within the channel and disposed entirely within the frame, the drivers being configured to electrically couple the substantially flat LED panel to an external AC power supply and to convert an AC input into a DC output suitable for powering the substantially flat light emitting diode panel; wherein the drivers comprise long, narrow driving circuitry and includes a circuit board.

23. The light fixture of claim 22 , wherein the drivers have a length and a width, wherein the length-to-width ratio is at least 5 to 1.

24. The light fixture of claim 23 , wherein the length-to-width ratio of the drivers are at least 10 to 1.

25. The light fixture of claim 22 wherein the drivers include a single circuit board.

26. The light fixture of claim 22 , wherein the drivers comprise an array of circuit modules supported by the channel.

27. The light fixture of claim 22 , wherein the drivers include space-sensitive components oriented along a long direction of the drivers.
