Abstract

A fastener cartridge for creating a flexible fastener line is disclosed. The fastener cartridge includes a plurality of fasteners removably stored therein wherein at least some of the fasteners are oriented in directions which are transverse or oblique to an incision created by a cutting member passing through the fastener cartridge. Once these fasteners are deployed into tissue, the fasteners can translate and/or rotate within the tissue when the tissue is stretched.

Claims (63)

1. A fastener cartridge for creating a staple line within tissue, said fastener cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a plurality of fastener cavities; and

a plurality of fasteners, wherein said fasteners are removably stored in said fastener cavities, wherein said fasteners and said fastener cavities are arranged in a pattern which provides flexibility within the staple line, and wherein said pattern comprises:

a first longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a first direction, wherein said first longitudinal row is adjacent said longitudinal slot;

a second longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a second direction, wherein said second direction is different than said first direction, and wherein said second longitudinal row is adjacent said first longitudinal row; and

a third longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a third direction, wherein said third longitudinal row is adjacent said second longitudinal row.

2. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said third direction is parallel to said first direction.

3. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first direction and said third direction are transverse to said second direction.

4. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein said first direction and said third direction are oriented toward said distal end and said longitudinal slot.

5. The fastener cartridge of claim 4 , wherein said second direction is oriented toward said proximal end and said longitudinal slot.

6. The fastener cartridge of claim 1 , wherein a said fastener in said first longitudinal row, a said fastener in said second longitudinal row, and a said fastener in said third longitudinal row are transected by an axis which extends perpendicularly to said longitudinal slot.

7. A fastener cartridge for creating a staple line within tissue, said fastener cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a plurality of fastener cavities; and

a plurality of fasteners, wherein said fasteners are removably stored in said fastener cavities, wherein said fasteners and said fastener cavities are arranged in a pattern which provides extensibility within the staple line, and wherein said pattern comprises:

a first longitudinal row comprising first fasteners positioned along a first longitudinal axis which are rotated relative to said first longitudinal axis in a first direction, and wherein said first longitudinal row is adjacent said longitudinal slot;

a second longitudinal row comprising second fasteners positioned along a second longitudinal axis which are rotated relative to said second longitudinal axis in a second direction, wherein said second direction is different than said first direction, and wherein said second longitudinal row is adjacent said first longitudinal row; and

a third longitudinal row comprising third fasteners positioned along a third longitudinal axis extending relative to said third longitudinal axis in a third direction, wherein said third longitudinal row is adjacent said second longitudinal row.

8. The fastener cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said third direction is the same as said first direction.

9. The fastener cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said third direction is collinear with said third longitudinal axis.

10. The fastener cartridge of claim 7 , wherein said first fasteners and said third fasteners are oriented toward said distal end and said longitudinal slot.

11. The fastener cartridge of claim 10 , wherein said second fasteners are oriented toward said proximal end and said longitudinal slot.

12. The fastener cartridge of claim 7 , wherein a said fastener in said first longitudinal row, a said fastener in said second longitudinal row, and a said fastener in said third longitudinal row are transected by an axis which extends perpendicularly to said longitudinal slot.

13. A fastener cartridge for creating a staple line within tissue, said fastener cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a plurality of fastener cavities; and

a plurality of fasteners, wherein said fasteners are removably stored in said fastener cavities, wherein said fasteners and said fastener cavities are arranged in a pattern which provides flexibility within the staple line, and wherein said pattern comprises:

an inner longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a first direction, wherein said inner longitudinal row is adjacent said longitudinal slot;

an outer longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a second direction; and

an intermediate longitudinal row comprising fasteners oriented in a direction which is transverse to said first direction and said second direction, wherein said intermediate longitudinal row is intermediate said inner longitudinal row and said outer longitudinal row.

14. The fastener cartridge of claim 13 , wherein said first direction is parallel to said second direction.

15. The fastener cartridge of claim 13 , wherein said first direction and said second direction are oriented toward said distal end and said longitudinal slot.

16. The fastener cartridge of claim 13 , wherein a said fastener in said inner longitudinal row, a said fastener in said outer longitudinal row, and a said fastener in said intermediate longitudinal row are transected by an axis which extends perpendicularly to said longitudinal slot.

17. A fastener cartridge for creating a compliant staple line within tissue, said fastener cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a plurality of fastener cavities; and

a plurality of fasteners, wherein said fasteners are removably stored in said fastener cavities, wherein said fasteners and said fastener cavities are arranged in a pattern which provides flexibility within the staple line, and wherein said pattern comprises:

an inner fastener positioned in an inner fastener cavity oriented in a first direction;

an outer fastener positioned in an outer fastener cavity oriented in a second direction; and

an intermediate fastener positioned in an intermediate fastener cavity oriented in a direction which is transverse to said first direction and said second direction, wherein said intermediate fastener cavity comprises an inner cavity end and an outer cavity end, wherein said inner cavity end is bounded by said inner fastener, and wherein said outer cavity end is bounded by said outer fastener.

18. A fastener cartridge for creating a staple line within tissue, said fastener cartridge comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a proximal end;

a distal end;

a longitudinal slot configured to receive a cutting member; and

a plurality of fastener cavities; and
