Abstract

Aspects of the present invention relate to providing see-through computer display optics.

Claims (31)

1. A display assembly for a head mounted display comprising:

a. a light source;

b. a reflective image source;

c. one or more lenses;

d. a combiner that redirects light reflected by the reflective image source for viewing by a user's eye and provides a see-through view of an environment; and

e. a segmented partially reflective layer that redirects light from the light source towards the reflective image source and transmits light reflected by the reflective image source, wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes at least one flat segment;

wherein the segmented partially reflective layer is positioned between the one or more lenses and the combiner.

2. A display assembly for a head mounted display comprising:

a. a light source;

b. a reflective image source;

c. one or more lenses;

d. a combiner that redirects light reflected by the reflective image source for viewing by a user's eye and provides a see-through view of an environment;

e. a segmented partially reflective layer that redirects light from the light source towards the reflective image source and transmits light reflected by the reflective image source, wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes at least one flat segment; and

f. a trim polarizer between the one or more lenses and the combiner and wherein at least one of the lenses is a plastic lens.

3. The display assembly of claim 2 further comprising a half wave retarder between the trim polarizer and the combiner.

4. A display assembly for a head mounted display comprising;

a. a light source;

b. a reflective image source;

c. one or more lenses;

d. a combiner that redirects light reflected by the reflective image source for viewing by a user's eye and provides a see-through view of an environment;

e. a segmented partially reflective layer that redirects light from the light source towards the reflective image source and transmits light reflected by the reflective image source, wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes at least one flat segment;

wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes a multiple polarizer comprising a reflective polarizer and an absorptive polarizer and the reflective image source includes a quarter wave retarder and wherein the reflective polarizer is laminated to the absorptive polarizer and the reflective polarizer encompasses a smaller area than the absorptive polarizer.

5. The display assembly of claim 4 wherein the reflective polarizer encompasses less than 80% of the area of the absorptive polarizer.

6. The display assembly of claim 4 wherein the reflective polarizer encompasses less than 50% of the area of the absorptive polarizer.

7. A display assembly for a head mounted display comprising:

a. a light source;

b. a reflective image source;

c. one or more lenses;

d. a combiner that redirects light reflected by the reflective image source for viewing by a user's eye and provides a see-through view of an environment;

e. a segmented partially reflective layer that redirects light from the light source towards the reflective image source and transmits light reflected by the reflective image source, wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes at least one flat segment;

wherein the segmented partially reflective layer includes a multiple polarizer comprising a reflective polarizer and an absorptive polarizer and the reflective image source includes a quarter wave retarder and wherein the reflective polarizer is supported by a transparent carrier film and the absorptive polarizer is a separate film.
