Abstract

A system, device and method are described for operating a communication device communicating with a wireless network. The method comprises in a power save mode wherein a communication subsystem of the communication device has been deactivated: for a first period beginning at a first instance, re-activating the subsystem, executing an action relating to a link layer connection condition, and then de-activating the subsystem; and for a second period beginning at a second instance, re-activating the subsystem, executing an action relating to a network layer connection condition, and then de-activating the subsystem. For the method, the first period is repeated on a cycle based on a first frequency timed to allow the communication device to process a beacon signal from the wireless network; and the second period is repeated on a cycle based on a second frequency of occurrence of an Address Resolution Protocol request in the wireless network.

Claims (50)

1. A method for operating a communication device in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network, comprising:

in a power save mode wherein a communication subsystem of the communication device has been deactivated:

for a first period beginning at a first instance, re-activating the communication subsystem, executing an action relating to a link layer connection condition, and then de-activating the communication subsystem; and

for a second period beginning at a second instance, re-activating the communication subsystem, executing an action relating to a network layer connection condition, and then de-activating the communication subsystem,

wherein

the first period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a first frequency timed to allow the communication device to process a beacon signal from the wireless network; and

the second period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a second frequency of occurrence of an Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) request in the wireless network.

2. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first frequency of occurrence is determined from a delivery traffic indication map (DTIM) value in the beacon signal, such that if the DTIM value equals 1, then the first frequency of occurrence is set to be related to a larger DTIM value.

3. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein for the second period, the second frequency of occurrence is set to be shorter than the frequency of transmission of the ARP request by at least one host in the wireless network.

4. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising transmitting, in the second period, a unicast frame to other hosts listed in an ARP cache of the communication device.

5. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that is set to be shorter than a frequency of transmission of the ARP request from the wireless network.

6. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a delivery traffic indication map (DTIM) value is used to indicate a de-activation period for the communication subsystem.

7. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein a clock in the communication device tracks an elapsed time between receipt of the ARP request and receipt of a next ARP request to determine the second period of the power save mode.

8. The method as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the first period is extended for a predetermined period when broadcast traffic to the communication device from the wireless network is being sent to the communication device to allow the communication device to receive the broadcast traffic.

9. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

for a second period beginning at a second instance, generating and transmitting, by the communication device, a frame to a host in the wireless network before de-activating the communication subsystem,

wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a second frequency of occurrence of a network layer connection condition for the wireless network and the second period relates to a frequency of transmission of an ARP request for an Internet Protocol (IP) address for the communication device.

10. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

for a second period beginning at a second instance, generating and transmitting a frame to a host in the wireless network by the communication device before de-activating the communication subsystem,

wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a second frequency of occurrence of a network layer connection condition for the wireless network.

11. The method as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising:

for a second period beginning at a second instance, re-activating the communication subsystem and then de-activating the communication subsystem,

wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that relates to a frequency of transmission of an ARP request for an Internet Protocol (IP) address for the communication device.

12. A communication device operating in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network, comprising:

a communication subsystem providing transmission and reception of signals with a wireless 802.11-class network;

a microprocessor;

a memory device comprising:

a first module providing instructions executed on the microprocessor to operate the communication device in a power save mode wherein a communication subsystem of the communication device has been deactivated:

for a first period beginning at a first instance, re-activate the communication subsystem, executing an action relating to a link layer connection condition, and then de-activate the communication subsystem; and

for a second period beginning at a second instance, re-activate the communication subsystem, execute an action relating to a network layer connection condition, and then de-activate the communication subsystem,

wherein

the first period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a first frequency timed to allow the communication device to process a beacon signal from the wireless network; and

the second period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a second frequency of occurrence of an Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) request in the wireless network.

13. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the first frequency of occurrence is determined from a delivery traffic indication map (DTIM) value in the beacon signal, such that if the DTIM value equals 1, then the first frequency of occurrence is set to be related to a larger DTIM value.

14. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein for the second period, the second frequency of occurrence is set to be shorter than the frequency of transmission of the ARP request by at least one host in the wireless network.

15. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , further comprising:

a second module providing instructions executed on the microprocessor to transmit, in the second period, a unicast frame to other hosts listed in an ARP cache of the communication device.

16. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that is set to be shorter than a frequency of transmission of the ARP request from the wireless network.

17. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein a delivery traffic indication map (DTIM) value is used to indicate a de-activation period for the communication subsystem.

18. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein a clock in the communication device tracks an elapsed time between receipt of the ARP request and receipt of a next ARP request to determine the second period of the power save mode.

19. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the first period is extended for a predetermined period when broadcast traffic to the communication device from the wireless network is being sent to the communication device to allow the communication device to receive the broadcast traffic.

20. The communication device as claimed in claim 12 , further comprising:

a second module providing instructions executed on the microprocessor for a second period beginning at a second instance, to generate and transmit, by the communication device, a frame to a host in the wireless network before de-activating the communication subsystem,

wherein the second period is repeated on a cycle that is based on a second frequency of occurrence of a network layer connection condition for the wireless network and the second period relates to a frequency of transmission of an ARP request for an Internet Protocol (IP) address for the communication device.
