Abstract

An example method involves receiving, at a first internet domain, a first request from a client device, the first request indicative of access to media at the client. The first request includes identifying information identifying the media. A substitute value is generated at the first internet domain, the substitute value corresponding to the identifying information and obfuscating an identity of the media. If the client is not known, a response including the substitute value in place of the identifying information is sent from the first internet domain to the client. The response instructs the client to send a second request to a second internet domain, the second request includes the substitute value to hide the identity of the media within the second internet domain. If the client is known, an impression of the media is logged without sending the second request to the second internet domain.

Claims (80)

1. A method to monitor media exposure, the method comprising:

receiving, at a first internet domain, a first request from a client device, the first request indicative of access to media at the client device, and the first request including identifying information identifying the media;

generating a substitute value at the first internet domain after receiving the first request at the first internet domain, the substitute value corresponding to the identifying information and obfuscating an identity of the media;

determining if the client device is known;

if the client device is not known, sending, from the first internet domain to the client device, a response including the substitute value in place of the identifying information, the response to instruct the client device to send a second request to a second internet domain, the substitute value to be included in the second request to the second internet domain to hide the identity of the media from the second internet domain; and

if the client device is known, logging an impression of the media without sending the second request to the second internet domain.

2. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device is a site identifier of a media publisher, the substitute value to obfuscate the site identifier of the media publisher from the second internet domain.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device identifies a host website from which the client device accessed the media, the substitute value to obfuscate the host website from the second internet domain.

4. A method as defined in claim 1 , further including, when the first request includes an identifier associated with the client device, storing the identifier in association with the impression.

5. A method as defined in claim 4 , wherein the identifier includes a cookie set by a server of the first internet domain.

6. A method as defined in claim 4 , further including:

when the first request does not include the identifier, setting, via the first internet domain, the identifier in the client device; and

storing the identifier in association with the impression.

7. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first request is received at the first internet domain based on instructions provided with the media and executed at the client device when the client device accesses the media.

8. A method as defined in claim 7 , wherein the instructions include at least one of Java instructions, java script, or hyper-text markup language.

A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first request includes at least one of a campaign identifier, a creative type identifier, or a placement identifier associated with the media, the campaign identifier indicative of an advertisement campaign, the creative type identifier indicative of a technology type of the media, and the placement identifier indicative of a position of the media on a screen of the client device.

10. A method as defined in claim 1 , further including mapping the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

11. A method as defined in claim 10 , further including:

receiving, from the second internet domain, demographic data mapped to the substitute value; and

determining that the demographic data corresponds to the media presented at the client device based on the substitute value and the mapping of the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

12. A method as defined in claim 11 , wherein the demographic data from the second internet domain includes demographic information of a user associated with the client device.

13. A method as defined in claim 1 , further including selecting the second internet domain based on data indicative of a database proprietor that is most likely to have demographic information for a user associated with the client device.

14. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the second internet domain is associated with a social network service that collects demographic information from its registered users.

15. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the media is an advertisement.

16. A method as defined in claim 1 , further including sending, from the first internet domain, a second response to the client device, the second response to instruct the client device to send a third request to a third internet domain different from the second internet domain.

17. A method as defined in claim 16 , wherein the second response is sent to the client device when an impression was not logged at the second internet domain.

18. A method as defined in claim 1 , further including receiving, from the second internet domain, demographic information associated with a second impression logged at the second internet domain based on the second request.

19. A method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the response to instruct the client device to send the second request to the second internet domain instructs the client device to send the second request to an intermediary.

20. An apparatus to monitor media exposure, the apparatus comprising:

a communication interface to:

receive, at a first internet domain, a first request from a client device, the first request indicative of access to the media at the client device, and the first request including identifying information identifying the media, and

if the client device is not known, send, from the first internet domain to the client device, a response including a substitute value in place of the identifying information, the substitute value corresponding to the identifying information and obfuscating an identity of the media, the response to instruct the client device to send a second request to a second internet domain, the substitute value to be included in the second request to the second internet domain to hide the identity of the media from the second internet domain; and

a data structure to log an impression of the media if the client device is known without sending the second request to the second internet domain.

21. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device is a site identifier of a media publisher, the substitute value to obfuscate the site identifier of the media publisher from the second internet domain.

22. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device identifies a host website from which the client device accessed the media, the substitute value to obfuscate the host website from the second internet domain.

23. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the data structure stores an identifier in association with the impression when the first request includes the identifier associated with the client device.

24. An apparatus as defined in claim 23 , wherein the identifier includes a cookie set by a server of the first internet domain.

An apparatus as defined in claim 23 , wherein the communication interface is to, when the first request does not include the identifier, set, via the first internet domain, the identifier in the client device, and the data structure is to store the identifier in association with the impression after the communication interfaces sets the identifier in the client device.

26. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the first request is received at the first internet domain based on instructions provided with the media and executed at the client device when the client device accesses the media.

27. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the instructions include at least one of Java instructions, java script, or hyper-text markup language.

An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the first request includes at least one of a campaign identifier, a creative type identifier, or a placement identifier associated with the media, the campaign identifier indicative of an advertisement campaign, the creative type identifier indicative of a technology type of the media, and the placement identifier indicative of a position of the media on a screen of the client device.

29. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , further including a site identifier map to map the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

30. An apparatus as defined in claim 29 , further including a report generator to:

receive, from the second internet domain, demographic data mapped to the substitute value; and

determine that the demographic data corresponds to the media presented at the client device based on the substitute value and the mapping of the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

31. An apparatus as defined in claim 30 , wherein the demographic data from the second internet domain includes demographic information of a user associated with the client device.

32. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , further including a rules engine to select the second internet domain based on data indicative of a database proprietor that is most likely to have demographic information for a user associated with the client device.

33. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the second internet domain is associated with a social network service that collects demographic information from its registered users.

34. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the media is an advertisement.

35. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the communication interface is to send from the first internet domain, a second response to the client device, the second response to instruct the client device to send a third request to a third internet domain different from the second internet domain.

36. An apparatus as defined in claim 35 , wherein the second response is sent to the client device when an impression was not logged at the second internet domain.

37. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , further including a report generator to receive, from the second internet domain, demographic information associated with a second impression logged at the second internet domain based on the second request.

38. An apparatus as defined in claim 20 , wherein the response to instruct the client device to send the second request to the second internet domain instructs the client device to send the second request to an intermediary.

39. A tangible computer readable medium, comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to at least:

access, at a first internet domain, a first request from a client device, the first request indicative of access to media at the client device, and the first request including identifying information identifying the media;

determine if the client device is known;

if the client device is not known, send, from the first internet domain to the client device, a response including a substitute value in place of the identifying information, the response to instruct the client device to send a second request to a second internet domain, the substitute value to be included in the second request to the second internet domain to hide the identity of the media from the second internet domain; and

if the client device is known, log an impression of the media without sending the second request to the second internet domain.

40. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device is a site identifier of a media publisher, the substitute value to obfuscate the site identifier of the media publisher from the second internet domain.

41. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the identifying information in the first request from the client device identifies a host website from which the client device accessed the media, the substitute value to obfuscate the host website from the second internet domain.

42. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to, when the first request includes an identifier associated with the client device, store the identifier in association with the impression.

43. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 42 , wherein the identifier includes a cookie set by a server of the first internet domain.

44. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 42 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to:

when the first request does not include the identifier, set the identifier in the client device; and

store the identifier in association with the impression.

45. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the first request is received at the first internet domain based on second instructions provided with the media and executed at the client device when the client device accesses the media.

46. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 45 , wherein the second instructions include at least one of Java instructions, java script, or hyper-text markup language.

47. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the first request includes at least one of a campaign identifier, a creative type identifier, or a placement identifier associated with the media, the campaign identifier indicative of an advertisement campaign, the creative type identifier indicative of a technology type of the media, and the placement identifier indicative of a position of the media on a screen of the client device.

48. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to map the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

49. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 48 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to:

access demographic data mapped to the substitute value from the second internet domain; and

determine that the demographic data corresponds to the media presented at the client device based on the substitute value and the mapping of the substitute value to the identifying information at the first internet domain.

50. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 49 , wherein the demographic data from the second internet domain includes demographic information of a user associated with the client device.

51. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to select the second internet domain based on data indicative of a database proprietor that is most likely to have demographic information for a user associated with the client device.

52. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the second internet domain is associated with a social network service that collects demographic information from its registered users.

53. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the media is an advertisement.

54. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to send, from the first internet domain, a second response to the client device, the second response to instruct the client device to send a third request to a third internet domain different from the second internet domain.

55. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 54 , wherein the second response is sent to the client device when an impression was not logged at the second internet domain.

56. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the instructions cause the machine to receive, from the second internet domain, demographic information associated with a second impression logged at the second internet domain based on the second request.

57. A tangible computer readable medium as defined in claim 39 , wherein the response to instruct the client device to send the second request to the second internet domain instructs the client device to send the second request to an intermediary.
