Abstract

A guide is configured in an authoring program to aid the user in editing objects on a document. The guide can be a horizontally or vertically oriented guide line and can be created from a single ruler, either a vertical or horizontal ruler displayed on the workspace. To create a horizontal guide, the user can position the cursor on a horizontal ruler. The user can click-and-hold and drag the cursor to create and position a horizontal guide over the workspace. To create a vertical guide, the user can position the cursor in the horizontal ruler and click and release. The user can create both vertical and horizontal guides using the vertical ruler in a corresponding manner, where clicking on the vertical ruler creates a horizontal guide, and click-and-hold and dragging creates a vertical guide. Guides can be individually configured or altered in their visual characteristics.

Claims (45)

1. A computer-implemented method for generating guide lines comprising:

detecting, by a processor, a cursor positioned over a horizontal ruler on a user interface;

generating a first guide line in a vertical orientation in response to receiving a first input with respect to the horizontal ruler;

determining a second input comprises moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in a downward direction to a position below the horizontal ruler, and

generating a second guide line in a horizontal orientation orthogonal to the vertical orientation in response to determining the second input moves the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction to the position below the horizontal ruler.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first input comprises a click, the click comprising pressing and releasing of a button on a user input device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second input comprises a click-and-hold while moving the cursor away from the horizontal ruler, the click-and-hold comprising pressing and holding a button on a user input device.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

determining if the second input comprises the click-and-hold followed by moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction, where the position below the horizontal ruler exceeds a threshold value; and

displaying the second guide line in the horizontal orientation in response to determining the second input comprises the click-and-hold followed by moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction, where the position below the horizontal ruler exceeds the threshold value.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the threshold value is seven pixels.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising presenting a mark on the horizontal ruler which tracks a location of the first guide line before the first guide line is set.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the horizontal ruler is not displayed.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a third input selecting the second guide line; and

displaying a dialog box for changing a visual characteristic of the second guide line in response to receiving the third input.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the visual characteristic comprises one of a color, a thickness and a line type of the second guide line.

10. A system for generating guide lines comprising:

a processor;

a memory communicatively coupled to the processor and storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to

detect a cursor positioned over a horizontal ruler on a user interface,

generate a first guide line in a vertical orientation in response to receiving a first input with respect to the horizontal ruler,

determine a second input comprises moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in a downward direction to a position below the horizontal ruler, and

generate a second guide line in a horizontal orientation orthogonal to the vertical orientation in response to determining the second input moves the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction to the position below the horizontal ruler.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the first input is a click, the click comprising pressing and releasing of a button on a user input device.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the second input is a click-and-hold while moving the cursor away from the horizontal ruler, the click-and-hold comprising pressing and holding a button on a user input device.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the memory stores further instructions which, when executed by the processor, further cause the processor to display a mark on the horizontal ruler, whereby the mark tracks a location of the first guide line before the first guide line is set.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the horizontal ruler is not displayed.

15. The system of claim 12 , having further computer executable instructions stored on the memory which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

determine if the second input comprises the click-and-hold followed by moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction, where the position below the horizontal ruler exceeds a threshold value; and

display the second guide line in the horizontal orientation in response to determining the second input comprises the click-and-hold followed by moving the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction, where the position below the horizontal ruler exceeds the threshold value.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the threshold value is seven pixels.

17. The system of claim 10 , having further computer executable instructions stored on the memory which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive a third input selecting the second guide line; and

display a dialog box for changing a visual characteristic of the second guide line in response to receiving the third input.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the visual characteristic comprises one of a color, a thickness and a line type of the second guide line.

19. An image independent system for generating a guide line comprising:

a processor;

a memory communicatively coupled to the processor and storing computer-executable instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to

detect a cursor positioned over an area of a display,

alter the appearance of the cursor, by the processor, in response to detecting the cursor positioned over the area of the display,

generate a first guide line in a vertical orientation in response to receiving a first input with respect to the area of the display,

determine a second input comprises moving the cursor from over the area of the display in a downward direction to a position below the area of the display; and

generate a second guide line in a horizontal orientation orthogonal to the vertical orientation in response to determining the second input moves the cursor from over the horizontal ruler in the downward direction to the position below the area of the display.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the area of the display comprises the area where a horizontal ruler is displayed.
