Abstract

A method and system are provided for percutaneously gaining access to oxygenated blood with one or more anastomosis devices and pumping such oxygenated blood directly to the aorta adjacent to the right atrium or left atrium via a VAD system. In one embodiment, a VAD system can be implanted with open surgery.

Claims (21)

1. A method for connecting a ventricular assist device to a heart, the method comprising:

puncturing the heart with a catheter, directly adjacent a right atrium or a left atrium of the heart, to access an aortic artery downstream of an aortic valve; and

implanting one or more anastomosis devices in tissue of the heart, the one or more anastomosis devices providing a conduit for oxygenated blood to flow from the left atrium of the heart to the aortic artery, the arterial blood flowing to the aortic artery via a pumping device operatively coupled to the one or more anastomosis devices and with the pumping device positioned in the heart.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the puncturing comprises:

performing an anastomosis between the left atrium and the right atrium; and

performing an anastomosis between the right atrium and the aortic artery.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the puncturing comprises performing an anastomosis between the left atrium and the aortic artery.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the implanting comprises implanting the pumping device adjacent to the one or more anastomosis devices.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising accessing the heart with the catheter.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising pulling a filament coupled to the pumping device such that one end is pulled away from the heart.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the pulling comprises pulling the one end of the filament to an upper region of a body.

8. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising coupling the one end of the filament to a controller configured to control the pumping device.

9. A method for connecting a ventricular assist device to a heart, the method comprising:

accessing the heart with a catheter;

performing an anastomosis between the left atrium of the heart and an aortic artery; and

connecting a conduit to extend between the left atrium and the aortic artery such that a pumping device coupled to the conduit pumps oxygenated blood from the left atrium to the aortic artery.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the performing comprises puncturing the heart.

11. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the connecting comprises connecting the conduit having the pumping device positioned therewith.

12. The method according to claim 9 , further comprising pulling a filament coupled to the pumping device such that one end is pulled away from the heart.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the pulling comprises pulling the one end of the filament to an upper region of a body.

14. The method according to claim 12 , further comprising coupling the one end of the filament to a controller configured to control the pumping device.
