Abstract

A card actuated automated banking machine ( 152, 198, 200 ) includes a plurality of transaction function devices. The transaction function devices include a card reader ( 170 ), a printer ( 174 ), a bill dispenser ( 176 ), a display ( 182 ), a check imaging device ( 186 ), and at least one processor ( 190 ). The machine is operative, responsive to receiving a check and certification data, to dispense cash in exchange for the check. The person presenting the check to the machine need not provide user identifying inputs through input devices of the machine in order to receive cash for the check. Furthermore, prior to accepting the check as a payment, the person can communicate with at least one computer ( 204 ) through at least one consumer interface device ( 208 ) to verify that the check is payable for the check amount.

Claims (30)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a mobile phone that comprises an image capture device, a wireless transceiver, and a processor coupled with the image capture device and wireless transceiver;

the image capture device is operable to capture an image of a financial check associated with a financial account;

wherein the at least one image includes check data that includes a check amount;

the processor is operable to operate the wireless transceiver to send the image along with a request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved to ensure check payment; and

the processor is operable to receive via the wireless transceiver a message confirming receipt of the request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved;

wherein the message includes a code corresponding to the check that allows a potential recipient of the check to verify that the check is payable for the check amount, and a recipient of the check to anonymously cash the check without providing any machine user identification data.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is further operable to receive via the wireless transceiver a message indicating that the check is good for the check amount.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the check is made payable to cash.

4. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein sending the request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved causing a computer system associated with the financial account to determine whether the check is valid for the check amount.

5. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the check data includes customer data.

6. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is further operable to determine from the image captured by the image capturing device account data corresponding to the financial account.

7. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is further operable to verify that the code check can be used to cash the check for the check amount.

8. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is further operable to provide the code to an automated banking machine to cash the check.

9. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is operable to receive a transaction receipt via the wireless transceiver.

10. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the processor is operable to determine the check amount from the image.

11. A tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium with computer readable instructions for execution by a processor encoded thereon that when executed are operable to:

obtain data representative of an image of a financial check associated with a financial account from an image capture device;

operate a wireless transceiver to send the data representative of the image along with a request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved to ensure check payment; and

receive via the wireless transceiver a message confirming receipt of the request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved;

wherein the message includes a code corresponding to the check that allows a potential recipient of the check to verify that the check is payable for the check amount, and a recipient of the check to anonymously cash the check without providing any machine user identification data.

12. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions are further operable to receive via the wireless transceiver a message indicating that the check is good for the check amount.

13. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the check is made payable to cash.

14. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein sending the request that funds corresponding to the check amount be reserved causes a computer system associated with the financial account to determine whether the check is valid for the check amount.

15. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the check data includes customer data associated with the financial account.

16. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions are further operable to determine from the image captured by the image capturing device, account data corresponding to the financial account.

17. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions are further operable to verify that the code check can be used to cash the check for the check amount.

18. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions are further operable to provide the code to an automated banking machine to cash the check.

19. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the instructions are further operable to receive a transaction receipt via the wireless transceiver.

20. The tangible, non-transitory computer readable medium according to claim 11 , wherein the processor is operable to determine the check amount from the data representative of the image.
