Abstract

Variable liquid crystal devices for controlling the propagation of light through a liquid crystal layer use a frequency dependent material to dynamically reconfigure effective electrode structures in the device. The drive signal source uses pulse-width modulation to set a frequency and an amplitude of the drive signal.

Claims (31)

1. A variable optical device for controlling the propagation of light, said optical device comprising:

a liquid crystal layer;

an electrode system arranged to generate an electric field acting on said liquid crystal layer, said electrode system including:

a bottom flat electrode,

a top fixed conductor electrode; and

a frequency dependent material having a charge mobility that varies with a frequency of an electrical drive signal applied to the electrode system, at least one of said fixed conductor electrode and said frequency dependent material being characterized by a non-flat geometry;

wherein a frequency of the drive signal is varied to vary an effective electrode configuration of the electrode system so as to modify a spatial profile of the electric field to provide a desired light propagation behavior and wherein the electric field has a portion substantially defined by said fixed conductor electrode that varies little as a function of frequency of said drive signal, and a portion defined by said frequency dependent material that varies significantly as a function of frequency of said drive signal.

2. A device as defined in claim 1 , wherein the other of said fixed conductor electrode and said frequency dependent material is characterized by an essentially flat geometry.

3. A device as defined in claim 2 , wherein said fixed conductor electrode is one of a curved layer of conductive material coated atop a lens-like polymer structure and a multi-level flat-surface layer of conductive material coated atop a flat-aperture polymer structure.

4. A device as defined in claim 2 , wherein said frequency dependent material comprises a curved layer of material encased in a flat-surface polymer structure, said flat-surface polymer structure being arranged between said liquid crystal layer and said fixed conductor electrode.

5. A device as defined in claim 4 , wherein said fixed conductor electrode comprises a flat layer of conductive material coated atop said flat-surface polymer structure.

6. A device as defined in claim 5 , wherein said flat-surface polymer structure is formed of a pair of lens-like polymer structures having opposite and matching curved surfaces, and wherein said curved layer of frequency dependent material comprises a layer of optically transparent glue attaching the opposite and matching curved surfaces of the pair of lens-like polymer structures.

7. A device as defined in claim 3 , wherein said electrode system is essentially optically hidden and does not interfere with the propagation of light through said device.

8. A device as defined in claim 1 , wherein the electric field is substantially defined by said frequency dependent material.

9. A device as defined in claim 1 , wherein said device controls an image.

10. A device as defined in claim 9 , wherein said device is a tunable focus lens.

11. A device as defined in claim 10 , wherein said lens is one of a variable refractive lens and a variable diffractive lens.

12. A device as defined in claim 1 , wherein said device further comprises a variable frequency control signal circuit configured to cause said device to control propagation of light as a function of control signal frequency.

13. A variable optical device for controlling the propagation of light, said optical device comprising:

an electrode system including:

a flat bottom electrode; and

a top electrode;

a liquid crystal layer arranged between said bottom electrode and said top electrode, said electrode system being operative to generate an electric field acting on said liquid crystal layer;

a frequency dependent material having a charge mobility that varies with a frequency of an electrical drive signal applied to the electrode system, wherein said frequency dependent material is arranged between said liquid crystal layer and said top electrode, and one of said top electrode and said frequency dependent material is characterized by a non-flat geometry;

wherein a frequency of the drive signal is varied to vary an effective electrode configuration of the electrode system so as to modify a spatial profile of the electric field to provide a desired light propagation behavior.

14. A liquid crystal optical device of the type having at least one liquid crystal layer provided between substrates bearing alignment layers, and an electrode arrangement with a frequency dependent material located about an aperture of the optical device to provide a spatially modulated electric field, characterized in that the electrode arrangement is structured to change an optical phase front in the liquid crystal layer by having spatially non-uniform layer of frequency dependent material.

15. The device as defined in claim 14 , wherein the device is a lens, said electrode arrangement including a hole-patterned electrode defining an essentially circular aperture, and said frequency dependent material is located within the aperture.

16. The device as defined in claim 15 , wherein the spatially non-uniform layer comprises a ring of frequency dependent material within said aperture.

17. The device as defined in claim 16 , wherein said ring of frequency dependent material is deposited on a substantially uniform layer of said frequency dependent material.

18. The device as defined in claim 14 , wherein the device comprises: two said liquid crystal layers having alignment layers arranged essentially in orthogonal directions; and at least one layer of said non-uniform frequency dependent material.

19. The device as defined in claim 18 , wherein the device comprises two said frequency dependent material layers, each frequency dependent material layer corresponding to one of said liquid crystal layers.
