Abstract

Methods and systems are described herein for a media guidance application that prevents a user from terminating a service by broadening criteria used for user recommendations in response to determining that a user is getting bored of the media content already consumed through the service. For example, the media guidance application may determine that the rate at which a user consumes media assets (e.g., through a service) is declining (e.g., indicating the user is losing interest). In response, the media guidance application recommends new media assets with characteristics (e.g., genre, subject matter, media asset series affiliation) that differs from the media assets previously consumed by the user.

Claims (43)

1. A method for preventing users from terminating services, the method comprising:

continuously monitoring media assets consumed by a user;

storing a viewing history for a user comprising the media assets and times they were consumed;

calculating, using control circuitry, from the viewing history for the user, a rate at which the user consumed the media assets over a first time period;

comparing, using the control circuitry, the rate to a threshold rate;

in response to determining that the rate does not exceed the threshold rate, retrieving, using the control circuitry, a characteristic from a database of characteristics;

comparing the characteristic to characteristics of the media assets consumed over the first time period to determine whether the characteristic is associated with the media assets;

in response to determining the characteristic is not associated with the media assets:

comparing a list of a plurality of media assets to the viewing history for the user to identify a media asset not consumed by the user;

retrieving, from an entry associated with the media asset in a database, a plurality of characteristics of the media asset;

comparing each of the plurality of characteristics of the media asset with the characteristic to determine whether the media asset is associated with the characteristic; and

in response to determining the media asset is associated with the characteristic, recommending, using the control circuitry, the media asset.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold rate is based on a rate at which the user consumed media assets over a second time period.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic is a genre.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic is a media asset series affiliation.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the characteristic not associated with media assets consumed over the first time period further comprises broadening criteria used for user recommendations.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the viewing history of the user is retrieved in response to determining that a subscription service, through which the user accesses the media assets consumed over the first time period, is near expiration.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining whether to generate for display, on a display device, content associated with preventing the user from terminating the first service based on whether the rate exceeds the threshold rate.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the content includes a discount for the first service.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the content includes a list of media assets accessible through the first service.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the media assets available from the first service are accessible at a future point in time.

11. A system for preventing users from terminating services, the system comprising:

storage circuitry configured to store characteristics of media assets and a viewing history for a user comprising the media assets and times they were consumed; and

control circuitry configured to:

continuously monitor media assets consumed by a user;

calculate from the viewing history for the user, a rate at which the user consumed the media assets over a first time period;

compare the rate to a threshold rate;

in response to determining that the rate does not exceed the threshold rate, retrieve a characteristic from a database of characteristics;

comparing the characteristic to characteristics of the media assets consumed over the first time period to determine whether the characteristic is associated with the media assets;

in response to determining the characteristic is not associated with the media assets:

compare a list of a plurality of media assets to the viewing history for the user to identify a media asset not consumed by the user;

retrieve, from an entry associated with the media asset in a database, a plurality of characteristics of the media asset;

compare each of the plurality of characteristics of the media asset with the characteristic to determine whether the media asset is associated with the characteristic; and

in response to determining the media asset is associated with the characteristic, recommend the media asset.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the threshold rate is based on a rate at which the user consumed media assets over a second time period.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the characteristic is a genre.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the characteristic is a media asset series affiliation.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine the characteristic not associated with media assets consumed over the first time period is further configured to broaden criteria used for user recommendations.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the viewing history of the user is retrieved in response to determining that a subscription service, through which the user accesses the media assets consumed over the first time period, is near expiration.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine whether to generate for display, on a display device, content associated with preventing the user from terminating the first service based on whether the rate exceeds the threshold rate.

18. The system of claim 17 , wherein the content includes a discount for the first service.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the content includes a list of media assets accessible through the first service.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the media assets available from the first service are accessible at a future point in time.
