Abstract

Relays having internal connections on both sides of their switches may be used in conjunction with a connector that integrates both the normal relay switch control lines with the sensing conductors of a control module for a battery module of an energy storage device. In this manner, sensing conductors may be routed along with the switch control lines for the relay instead of separately as described above. This integration reduces the complexity and cost associated with the energy storage device, because it reduces the number of separately routed lines and also eliminates the external connections for at least some of the sensing conductors.

Claims (19)

1. A battery module, comprising:

a plurality of battery cells;

a battery terminal configured to output power produced by the plurality of battery cells;

a relay having a first contact electrically coupled to the plurality of battery cells and a second contact electrically coupled to the battery terminal, having a switch interposed between the first contact and the second contact, having a switch control operable to cause the switch to transition between an open state and a closed state, having a first sense connection point internal to the relay on one side of the switch and a second sense connection point internal to the relay on the other side of the switch, and having a terminal having a first set of conductors extending to the switch control and a second set of conductors extending to the first and second sense connection points respectively, wherein the relay is configured to electrically couple and decouple the plurality of battery cells to the battery terminal via the switch interposed between the first contact and the second contact;

a control module having measurement electronics configured to sense a condition of the plurality of battery cells via a first sensing conductor and a second sensing conductor and having a relay driver configured to deliver signals to the switch control via a set of relay control lines; and

a connector configured to couple the set of relay control lines and the first and second sensing conductors to the terminal of the relay such that the set of relay control lines make electrical contact with the first set of conductors and the first and second sensing conductors make electrical contact with the second set of conductors.

2. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells comprise a plurality of prismatic battery cells.

3. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the battery terminal is configured to output power from the plurality of battery cells to a system bus.

4. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises a mono-stable relay.

5. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises a bi-stable relay.

6. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises a mechanical relay.

7. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises an insulating gate bipolar transistor.

8. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises a power MOSFET.

9. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the relay comprises a thyristor.

10. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the switch control comprises a coil.

11. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the measurement electronics are configured to sense a voltage condition of the battery module via the first sensing conductor and the second sensing conductor.

12. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the connector comprises a housing that encompasses respective terminating ends of the set of relay control lines and first and second sensing conductors.

13. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of battery cells are configured to power the control module via the electrical contact between the first and second sensing conductors and the second set of conductors.

14. The battery module of claim 1 , wherein a lead-acid battery is electrically coupled to the battery terminal, and the lead-acid battery is configured to power the control module via the electrical contact between the first and second sensing conductors and the second set of conductors.
