Abstract

A system and method for menu-based navigation to view audio and/or visual media is disclosed. A user can navigate through a menu system by moving a cursor between various showcases listed in a second display area of a screen. When the user selects a category, the menu changes to display sub-categories within the category in a first area of the screen. The second display area can display information about available media items within a selected category or sub-category. A third display area can display additional information about the selected media item. There can also be a display area where a user can create a filter within a selected category or sub-category. The menu selections can contain images representative of categories. The categories can be genres of movies or music. Other embodiments are also disclosed herein.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

transmitting the instructions to display the first list of available showcases comprises:

automatically transmitting instructions to display the first list of available showcases such that each showcase in the first list of available showcases represents a dynamically created collection of related media.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a second input selecting a first media of the list of available media in the second display area;

transmitting, to a remote location, a media file according to the second input; and

transmitting instructions to facilitate a playing of the media file.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

the media file comprises at least one of a video file or an audio file; and

the first list of available showcases is based on the user history, the user history comprising media files a user has previously viewed, rented, or purchased.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

transmitting instructions to display one or more navigation devices in the second display area, the one or more navigation devices configured to allow a user to scroll through the first list of available showcases available through the second display area.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

transmitting the instructions to display the first list of available showcases further comprises:

transmitting instructions to display a scrollable row of one or more buttons in the first display area, each button of the one or more buttons representing an available showcase in the first list of available showcases; and

transmitting instructions to display one or more navigation devices in the first display area, the one or more navigation devices configured to allow a user to scroll through the scrollable row of the one or more buttons.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

automatically transmitting the instructions to populate the first display area with the list of available categories comprises:

automatically transmitting instructions to simultaneously display (1) the list of available categories in the first display area on the screen based on the first input and (2) the list of available media in the second display area on the screen based on the first showcase of the first list of available showcases.

11. A system comprising:

one or more processing modules; and

one or more non-transitory storage modules storing computing instructions configured to run on the one or more processing modules and perform acts of:

transmitting instructions to display, on a screen comprising a first display area and a second display area, a first list of available showcases in the second display area of the screen while the first display area is devoid of a list of available categories, wherein the first list of available showcases is based on at least one of a user history, new media, or popular media;

receiving a first input selecting a first showcase of the first list of available showcases;

in response to receiving the first input, automatically transmitting instructions to populate the first display area with (1) the list of available categories, (2) a home position, and (3) one or more secondary positions, wherein the list of available categories is based on the first input; and

after receiving the first input, automatically transmitting instructions to repopulate the second display area with a list of available media based on (1) the first showcase of the first list of available showcases and (2) a category in the list of available categories in the home position, wherein the list of available media replaces the first list of available showcases in the second display area.
