Abstract

A system electronically monitors the consumption of gas adsorbent media in a media bed. The system includes a controller and a monitoring rod having a plurality of sensors disposed on the monitoring rod. The sensors are in communication with the controller. Each sensor includes a corrodible portion having an exposed electrically conducting material susceptible to corrosion by a corrosive agent, a first lead in electrical contact with a first end of the corrodible portion, and a second lead in electrical contact with a second end of the corrodible portion. The corrodible portion, the first lead and the second lead together form a continuous communication path to the controller, and the monitoring rod is at least partially disposed in the media.

Claims (38)

1. A device for installation within an air purification system for monitoring chemical adsorption of a gas by a gas adsorbent media housed within the air purification system, comprising:

a monitoring rod further comprising:

a distal end of the monitoring rod;

a proximal end of the monitoring rod disposed opposite the distal end along an axis of the monitoring rod;

an interior portion of the monitoring rod; and

an exterior surface portion of the monitoring rod; and

a plurality of sensors in communication with a controller, each of the plurality of sensors further comprising:

a corrodible portion disposed on the exterior portion of the monitoring rod comprising an exposed electrically conducting material susceptible to corrosion by one or more chemicals adsorbed by the gas adsorbent media;

a first lead at least partially disposed within the rod interior in electrical contact with a first end of the corrodible portion; and

a second lead at least partially disposed within the rod interior in electrical contact with a second end of the corrodible portion;

wherein the corrodible portion, the first lead and the second lead comprise a continuous electrical connectivity path to the controller.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the corrodible portion is configured to respond with a change in resistance and/or permittivity when subjected to the one or more chemicals.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the monitoring rod is at least partially hollow.

4. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a cap disposed on the distal end configured to prevent the one or more chemicals from entering the interior.

5. The device of claim 3 , further comprising an aperture between the rod interior portion and exterior portion, wherein the first lead and/or the second lead of at least one sensor passes through the aperture.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first lead comprises a first portion of a shielded wire, the second lead comprises a second portion of a shielded wire, and the corrodible portion comprises an unshielded portion of the shielded wire.

7. The device of claim 3 , further comprising a sealing material disposed within the monitoring rod.

8. The device of claim 5 , further comprising a sealing material configured to seal the aperture around the first lead and/or second lead.

9. A system for electronically monitoring the consumption of a gas by a gas adsorbent media bed housed within an air purification system, comprising:

a controller comprising a memory and a logic configured to execute non-transient instructions; and

a monitoring rod further comprising a distal end of the monitoring rod, a proximal end of the monitoring rod disposed opposite the distal end along an axis of the monitoring rod, an interior portion of the monitoring rod, and an exterior surface portion of the monitoring rod for installation within the air purification system comprising a plurality of sensors disposed on the monitoring rod in communication with the controller, each of the plurality of sensors further comprising:

a corrodible portion disposed on the exterior portion of the monitoring rod comprising an exposed electrically conducting material susceptible to corrosion by one or more chemicals adsorbed by the gas adsorbent media;

a first lead in electrical contact with a first end of the corrodible portion; and

a second lead in electrical contact with a second end of the corrodible portion,

wherein the corrodible portion, the first lead and the second lead comprise a continuous communication path to the controller, and the monitoring rod is at least partially disposed in the media bed.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the corrodible portion is configured to respond with a change in resistance and/or permittivity when subjected to the one or more chemicals.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the controller is configured to detect the change in resistance and/or permittivity of the corrodible portion.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the communication path comprises a hard wired communication path.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the controller is disposed within a portion of the monitoring rod.

14. An air purification and monitoring system comprising:

a gas adsorbent media bed;

a monitoring rod at least partially disposed within the gas adsorbent media bed, the monitoring rod comprising a distal end, a proximal end, an interior portion, an exterior portion, and a plurality of sensors disposed on the monitoring rod and in communication with a controller,

wherein each of the plurality of sensors further comprise a corrodible portion disposed on the exterior portion of the monitoring rod comprising an exposed electrically conducting material susceptible to corrosion by one or more chemicals adsorbed by the gas adsorbent media bed, a first lead in electrical contact with a first end of the corrodible portion, and a second lead in electrical contact with a second end of the corrodible portion; and

wherein the corrodible portion, the first lead and the second lead comprise a continuous electrical connectivity path to the controller.

15. The air purification and monitoring system of claim 14 , wherein the monitoring rod is disposed within the gas adsorbent media bed at an angle configured so the wire sensors provide measurement across the gas adsorbent media bed in a direction of airflow through the gas adsorbent media bed.

16. The air purification and monitoring system of claim 14 , wherein the monitoring rod is disposed within the gas adsorbent media bed parallel with a direction of airflow through the gas adsorbent media bed.
