Abstract

The present invention discloses an appliance for administering medical treatment to a person, as well as methods of using the appliance. In various embodiments, the appliance may be comprised of a medical device, an electronic processor, an electronic display (such as a liquid crystal display (LCD)), an audio output device (such as a piezoelectric speaker/microphone), electronic controls for controlling the operation of the electronic processor, and an electronic input receptacle (such as a DVD drive or USB port) adapted to receive and electronically access an electronic storage device (such as a DVD or flash memory device). The electronic processor or electronic storage device or both have information related to use and operation of the medical device digitally stored therein, so that the user of the appliance has ready access to instructional materials. Thus, the appliance includes an internal system for instructing the user in the use of the medical device.

Claims (32)

1. A negative pressure wound therapy apparatus comprising:

a negative pressure source configured to be fluidicially coupled to a wound dressing, the negative pressure source configured to supply negative pressure to the dressing;

a storage device configured to store information comprising instructions for operating the apparatus and negative pressure levels measured over time;

a display configured to output at least a portion of the information stored in the storage device;

a user interface configured to receive input from a user; and

a controller coupled to the storage device, the display, and the user interface, the controller configured to receive input from the user via the user interface and output to the display the instructions for operating the apparatus and the negative pressure levels measured over time while negative pressure is being supplied to the wound dressing.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display comprises a touch screen display and the user interface is part of the touch screen display.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display comprises a color display.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises a voice activated interface.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display is configured to output the instructions for operating the apparatus and the negative pressure levels measured over time substantially simultaneously.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus further comprises an audio output device, the information further comprises at least one alarm notification, and the controller is further configured to output the at least one alarm notification to one or more of the display and the audio output device.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the information further comprises a duration of treatment and the controller is further configured to output the duration of treatment to the display.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions for operating the apparatus comprise audio and/or visual content.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the audio and/or visual content comprises one or more of full-motion video, graphics, drawings, slides, charts, plans, and specifications.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the audio and/or visual content comprises video content and the apparatus further comprises an audio output device configured to output at least a portion of the audio and/or visual content.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a power supply configured to provide electrical power to the apparatus.

12. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a DVD drive.

13. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a port configured to receive an external storage device.

14. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the port is at least one of a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port and a flash storage device port.

15. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the instructions for operating the apparatus further comprise instructions for using the apparatus for providing negative pressure wound therapy.

16. A method for instructing how to use and operate a negative pressure wound therapy apparatus comprising a negative pressure source configured to be fluidicially coupled to a wound dressing, the negative pressure source configured to supply negative pressure to the dressing, a storage device configured to store information comprising instructions for operating the apparatus and negative pressure levels measured over time, and an interface configured to output at least a portion of the information stored in the storage device, the method comprising:

outputting on the interface the instructions for operating the apparatus and the negative pressure levels measured over time; and

supplying negative pressure from the negative pressure source to the wound dressing based at least in part on the outputted information.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the information is output while negative pressure is being supplied to the wound dressing.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein outputting the instructions for operating the apparatus and the negative pressure levels measured over time is performed substantially simultaneously.

19. The method of claim 16 , further comprising measuring negative pressure levels over time while supplying negative pressure from the negative pressure source.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising storing the measured negative pressure levels in the storage device.

21. The method of claim 16 , wherein the instructions for operating the apparatus comprise audio and/or visual content.

22. The method of claim 21 , wherein the audio and/or visual content comprises one or more of full-motion video, graphics, drawings, slides, charts, plans, and specifications.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the apparatus further comprises an audio output device and the method further comprises outputting at least a portion of the audio and/or visual content to the audio output device.

24. The method of claim 16 , wherein the information further comprises at least one alarm notification, and the method further comprises outputting the at least one alarm notification.

25. The method of claim 16 , wherein the information further comprises a duration of treatment and the method further comprises outputting the duration of treatment.
