Abstract

Systems, methods and devices are disclosed for directing and focusing signals to the brain for neuromodulation and for directing and focusing signals or other energy from the brain for measurement, heat transfer and imaging. An aperture in the skull and/or a channel device implantable in the skull can be used to facilitate direction and focusing. Treatment and diagnosis of multiple neurological conditions may be facilitated with the disclosed systems, methods and devices.

Claims (24)

1. A method of delivering transcranial direct current stimulation to a patient comprising:

establishing an ionic current in a conduit comprising a channel device at least partially implanted into the patient's skull, the channel device having a proximal end beneath the scalp of the patient and a distal end that extends at least partially into at least one layer of the skull of the patient, the conduit configured to direct and focus an electric field at a target region of the brain.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel device is fully implanted into the skull.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel device extends through the skull and on or into the patient's brain.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the channel device comprises an outer wall formed from a biocompatible material.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the biocompatible material comprises one of the following: titanium, stainless steel, polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene, polyetheretherketone, polyester and polyamide.

6. The method of claim 4 , wherein the biocompatible material is substantially impermeable to ions.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the transcranial direct current stimulation is adapted to treat one or more neurological dysfunctions selected from the group consisting of: a dysfunction caused by neurological damage, neurologic disease, neurodegenerative conditions, neuropsychiatric disorders, cognitive disorders, and learning disorders.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the transcranial direct current stimulation is adapted to treat a neurological condition selected from the group consisting of: epilepsy, movement disorders including Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease and essential tremor, stroke, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, dementia, memory disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder, obsessive/compulsive disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, neuropsychiatric affect disorders including post-traumatic stress syndrome, learning disorders, autism, speech disorders, auditory disorder including tinnitus, hearing disorders, and chronic pain.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the conduit includes an interior cavity at least partially filled with a substance that is at least partially conductive.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the substance comprises one or more of the following: porous silicone, a porous polyurethane, a saline solution, and a hydrogel.

11. A method of delivering transcranial direct current stimulation to a patient comprising:

establishing an ionic current in a conduit that extends at least partially into at least one layer of the skull of the patient, the conduit configured to direct and focus an electric field at a target region of the brain, and including an interior cavity at least partially filled with a substance that is at least partially conductive,

wherein the substance comprises a porous mass constructed by sintering together particles of a nonporous polymer, wherein the nonporous polymer comprises one or more of the following: a polyurethane, a polytetrafluoroethlene, a polyetheretherketone, a polyester, and a polyamide.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the conduit is an aperture.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the conduit is artificially formed.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the conduit is naturally occurring.

15. A method of delivering transcranial direct current stimulation to a patient comprising:

establishing an ionic current in a conduit that extends at least partially into at least one layer of the skull of the patient, the conduit configured to direct and focus an electric field at a target region of the brain, and including an interior cavity at least partially filled with a substance that is at least partially conductive,

wherein the substance is provided in an open-pore sponge.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the conduit is an aperture.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the conduit is artificially formed.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the conduit is naturally occurring.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the substance comprises one or more of the following: a porous silicone, a porous polyurethane, a saline solution, and a hydrogel.
