Abstract

A system of providing vehicle information and alerts to a vehicle operator or other user includes a device that removably attaches to the vehicle data port. The device communicates through the data port with a vehicle electronic control module. The device incorporates a set of vehicle operating parameters, communications settings and commands. The device monitors vehicle operating parameters and alerts a vehicle operator or other user if a monitored vehicle operating parameter exceeds a predetermined or configured limit. The vehicle operator or other user may configure custom calculations, formulas, or algorithms to generate new data based on existing vehicle or peripheral input data and then may use this new data as the configured limit to alert the vehicle operator or other user.

Claims (30)

1. A system for providing vehicle information and alerts comprising:

a device adapted to be removably attached to a vehicle diagnostic data port;

the device being capable of communicating through the diagnostic data port with at least one built-in or factory-installed vehicle electronic control module, audible warning chime, gauge, visual warning light, or other display; and

the device incorporating a predetermined set of one or more of (i) vehicle operating parameters, (ii) communications settings and (iii) commands;

wherein the device may be configured to monitor at least one vehicle operating parameter during normal vehicle operation and to alert a vehicle operator or other user if the monitored vehicle operating parameter exceeds a predetermined limit by at least one of:

(a) sounding a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle audible chime;

(b) illuminating a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed and non-aftermarket vehicle warning light; and

(c) displaying text, data, or other information on a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle gauge or other display.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle operator or other user is alerted by sounding a plurality of pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle audible chime systems, which sounding is either the same sound or a different sound on the plurality of pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle audible chime systems.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle operator or other user is alerted by illuminating a plurality of pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle warning lights.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the illumination of the pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle warning light includes blinking or flashing the warning light at a predetermined interval.

5. The system of claim 3 wherein the illumination of the plurality of pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle warning lights includes blinking or flashing the warning lights at a predetermined interval.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the vehicle operator or other user is alerted by way of displaying text, data, or other information on a plurality of pre-existing, built-in or factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle gauges or other displays.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the predetermined limit includes one or more conditions that may be over a specific value (>), under a specific value (<), over or equal to a specific value (>=), under or equal to a specific value (<=), equal to a specific value (==) or not equal to a specific value (!=), and further that when more than one condition is supplied, the conditions are separated by at least one Boolean operator to indicate the relationship of a first condition to a second condition.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein the device contains a built-in display, display connector, or indicator lights to provide information or alerts to the vehicle operator or other user about vehicle operating conditions.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the device contains a built-in speaker or audio output connector to provide audible alerts to the vehicle operator or other user about vehicle operating conditions.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the device is configured to monitor a plurality of vehicle operating parameters as a set and when the set of vehicle operating parameters, either in whole or in part, exceeds one or more configured limits, alerting the vehicle operator or other user.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the device switches between monitoring one or more separate and distinct sets of vehicle operating parameters upon receiving an event initiated by the vehicle operator or other user.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the event initiated by the vehicle operator or other user is an action of pressing, actuating, moving, turning, or gesturing with respect to a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed and non-aftermarket vehicle button, switch, knob, sensor, or touch input display.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the event initiated by the vehicle operator or other user is the action of pressing, actuating, moving, turning, or gesturing with respect to a button, switch, knob, sensor, or touch input display on said device or connected to said device via a peripheral input port.

14. A system for providing vehicle information and alerts comprising:

a device adapted to be removably attached to a vehicle diagnostic data port;

the device being configurable by a vehicle operator or other user;

the device being capable of communicating through the diagnostic data port with at least one built-in or factory-installed vehicle electronic control module, audible warning chime, gauge, visual warning light, or other display; and

the device incorporating a predetermined set of one or more of (i) vehicle operating parameters, (ii) communications settings and (iii) commands;

wherein the device may be configured to monitor at least one vehicle operating parameter during normal vehicle operation and to alert a vehicle operator or other user if the monitored vehicle operating parameter exceeds a configured limit by at least one of:

(a) sounding a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed and non-aftermarket vehicle audible chime;

(b) illuminating a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed and non-aftermarket vehicle warning light; and

(c) displaying text, data, or other information on a pre-existing, built-in, factory-installed, and non-aftermarket vehicle gauge or other display; and

wherein the vehicle operator or other user can configure the device to perform custom calculations, formulas, or algorithms to generate new data based on existing vehicle or peripheral input data and where the new data can be used as the configured limit to alert the vehicle operator or other user.
