Abstract

Systems and methods for providing metadata-selected advertisements are provided. These systems and methods may receive metadata and other media, select an object, read metadata attached to or associated with the selected object, select an advertisement based on the metadata, and display the selected advertisement. In addition, monitoring, collecting, and recording of predefined data concerning metadata selected advertisements may be provided. The invention also provides a receiver for receiving signals and/or data (e.g., programs, advertisements, program guides, metadata, etc.) and a processor for accepting a user=s input signal, selecting an object, reading metadata attached to or associated with a selected object, selecting an advertisement, and displaying the selected advertisement.

Claims (43)

1. A method comprising:

retrieving, from a storage device, a media asset and metadata which describes content of a scene of the media asset;

retrieving, from the storage device, a plurality of advertisements and metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements that describes content of a respective advertisement;

retrieving metadata which describes at least one predefined selectable target area in the scene of the media asset;

comparing the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements; and

based on the comparison, selecting one of the plurality of advertisements from the storage device for display on a display device associated with a user.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining whether the selected advertisement is stored locally;

in response to determining that the selected advertisement is not stored locally, downloading the selected advertisement from a remote location.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements occurs while the media asset is being displayed.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements comprises determining whether content of the scene is associated with content of at least one of the plurality of advertisements.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating for simultaneous display the scene of the media asset and the selected advertisement.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the metadata which describes content of the scene of the media asset describes an object depicted within the scene of the media asset, and wherein the selected advertisement is associated with the object.

7. The method of claim 6 , further comprising receiving a user selection of the object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the user selection of the object occurs prior to selecting the one of the plurality of advertisements for display.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising receiving a user input to order the object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

10. The method of claim 1 further comprising storing the plurality of advertisements in local storage.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein comparing the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements occurs in response to a user selection of an object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

additionally comparing the metadata which describes the at least one predefined selectable target area in the scene of the media asset; and

wherein the selection of the one of the plurality of advertisements for display is based on the additional comparison.

13. A system comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

retrieve, from a storage device, a media asset and metadata which describes content of a scene of the media asset;

retrieve, from the storage device, a plurality of advertisements and metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements that describes content of a respective advertisement;

retrieve metadata which describes at least one predefined selectable target area in the scene of the media asset;

compare the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements; and

based on the comparison, select one of the plurality of advertisements from the storage device for display on a display device associated with a user.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

determine whether the selected advertisement is stored locally;

in response to determining that the selected advertisement is not stored locally, download the selected advertisement from a remote location.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to compare the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements while the media asset is being displayed.

16. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to compare the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements by determining whether content of the scene is associated with content of at least one of the plurality of advertisements.

17. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to generate for simultaneous display the scene of the media asset and the selected advertisement.

18. The system of claim 13 , wherein the metadata which describes content of the scene of the media asset describes an object depicted within the scene of the media asset, and wherein the selected advertisement is associated with the object.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive a user selection of the object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the user selection of the object occurs prior to selecting the one of the plurality of advertisements for display.

21. The system of claim 18 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to receive a user input to order the object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

22. The system of claim 13 wherein the control circuitry is further configured to store the plurality of advertisements in local storage.

23. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to compare the metadata which describes the content of the scene of the media asset with the metadata associated with each of the plurality of advertisements in response to a user selection of an object depicted within the scene of the media asset.

24. The system of claim 13 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

additionally compare the metadata which describes the at least one predefined selectable target area in the scene of the media asset; and

select the one of the plurality of advertisements for display based on the additional comparison.
