Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed for evaluating a patient with vascular disease. One method includes receiving patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient's vasculature; creating an anatomic model representing at least a portion of a location of disease in the patient's vasculature based on the received patient-specific data; identifying one or more changes in geometry of the anatomic model based on a modeled progression or regression of disease at the location; calculating one or more values of a blood flow characteristic within the patient's vasculature using a computational model based on the identified one or more changes in geometry of the anatomic model; and generating an electronic graphical display of a relationship between the one or more values of the calculated blood flow characteristic and the identified one or more changes in geometry of the anatomic model.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plot displays a point at which the disease becomes functionally significant.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a disease type associated with the location of disease; and

determining one or more disease predictions or one or more treatment plans based on the determined disease type and the one or more values of the calculated blood flow characteristic.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a disease type for the disease in the patient's vasculature; and

determining the plaque remodeling characteristic based on the determined disease type.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the plot includes a display of hemodynamic sensitivity with respect to one or more plaque geometries associated with the one or more modeled changes in geometry and with a determined disease type of the individual.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the blood flow characteristic is fractional flow reserve.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the one or more modeled changes in geometry of the anatomic model include a change in lesion radius expressed as a percentage change.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the disease includes the presence of plaque and the method further comprises determining plaque remodeling characteristics including plaque composition, location of the plaque in the anatomy of the individual, hemodynamic forces, intramural stress, or a combination thereof.

9. A system for evaluating a patient with vascular disease, the system comprising:

a data storage device storing instructions for evaluating a patient with vascular disease; and

a processor configured to execute the instructions to perform a method including:

receiving patient-specific data regarding a geometry of the patient's vasculature;

determining an anatomic model representing at least a portion of a location of disease in the patient's vasculature based on the received patient-specific data;

determining a plaque remodeling characteristic characterizing a propensity of the disease in the patient's vasculature to progress or regress;

modeling, using the determined plaque remodeling characteristic, one or more changes in the geometry of the anatomic model at the location of disease due to the progression or regression of the disease;

calculating one or more values of a blood flow characteristic within the patient's vasculature using a computational model of blood flow through the anatomical model, taking into account the one or more modeled changes in geometry of the anatomic model; and

generating a display including a plot of the one or more values of the calculated blood flow characteristic versus the one or more modeled changes in geometry of the anatomic model due to the progression or regression of disease according to the determined plaque remodeling characteristic.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the plot displays a point at which the disease becomes functionally significant.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the system is further configured for:

classifying the disease type, wherein the one or more disease predictions or the one or more treatment plans are based on the classification of the disease type.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the system is further configured for:

determining a disease type associated with the location of disease; and

determining one or more disease predictions or one or more treatment plans based on the determined disease type and the one or more values of the calculated blood flow characteristic.
