Abstract

According to embodiments of the invention, a first wireless access point discovers a second wireless access point, the first wireless access point tunes its radio and privacy settings, without user input, based upon parameters automatically exchanged in response to the discovery of the second wireless access point, and a secure direct wireless connection is established between the first and second wireless access points using the radio and privacy settings. Adding the first wireless to an existing mesh network includes a determination of the best available direct wireless connection.

Claims (28)

1. A system that wirelessly connects to a best candidate wireless access point, the system comprising:

a wireless network interface that:

receives a plurality of individual broadcast beacons from a plurality of individual wireless access points, each of the plurality of individual broadcast beacons unique to each of the plurality of individual wireless access points broadcasting a respective beacon,

transmits a probe request to each of the plurality of individual wireless access points, and

receives a probe response from each of the plurality of individual wireless access points;

a memory; and

a processor executing instructions stored in the memory, wherein execution of the instructions stored in memory:

authenticates advertisement information in each of the unique broadcast beacons received over the wireless network interface,

identifies a mean signal strength for each of the plurality of individual wireless access points,

calculates a weight for each of the plurality of individual wireless access points, the calculation of a weight for a particular wireless access point of the plurality of individual wireless access points includes the identified mean received signal strength from that particular individual wireless access point,

selects a wireless access point with a largest weight as the best candidate wireless access point,

generates information to be sent to the best candidate wireless access point over the wireless network interface without passing the information through another wireless access point,

effectuates a connection to the best candidate wireless access point with the largest weight, and

encrypts and decrypts data.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the weight calculated for the particular individual wireless access point corresponds to the identified mean received signal strength from that particular individual wireless access point.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the advertisement information for each of the plurality of wireless access points broadcasting a beacon includes at least one of an element identification, an advertisement length, a vendor identification, and a payload field.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the payload field includes at least one of a protocol field, a software version, a hardware version, a hop count, a nonce, a number of wireless station connections, and an access point public key.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the calculating of the weight of the particular wireless access point also includes at least one of the number of wireless stations connections connected to the particular wireless access point, and the hop count of the particular wireless access point.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein execution of the instructions stored in memory further allows for a wireless station to transmit information to the wireless network interface after transmitting information to one of the plurality of individual wireless access points without changing the wireless radio or privacy settings.

7. The system of system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of a field programmable gate array (FPGA) and an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that encrypts and decrypts data.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further executes instructions from the memory to identify a best available wireless root access point.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the best available wireless root access point is identified by traversing a candidate list stored in the memory.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein the best available wireless root access point is identified by one or more of peer signal strength, a hop count, or client number.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the best available wireless root access point is identified by a candidate root access point with the strongest signal strength.

12. The system of system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of a field programmable gate array (FPGA) and an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) that identify a best available wireless root access point.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the FPGA or ASIC identify the best available wireless root access point by traversing a candidate list.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the FPGA or ASIC identify the best available wireless root access point from peer signal strength, identifying a hop count, or a client number.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the FPGA or ASIC identify the best available root access point based on the strongest signal strength.
