Abstract

Compositions ( 3 ) and methods of using such compositions ( 3 ) to condition, clean, or disinfect the flow path of a conduit ( 8 ) of a microfluidic devices ( 16 ), such as flow cytometers or liquid chromatographs.

Claims (10)

1. An antimicrobial composition, comprising:

an alcohol about 10% to about 55% by volume selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, N-propanol, isopropanol, 2-butanol, n-butanol and isobutanol;

a ketone about 2% to about 10% by volume selected from the group consisting of acetone, 2-butanone, cyclohexanone, 2-pentanone, 3-pentanone, 2-hexanone, 3-hexanone, methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclobutanone, and cyclopentanone, said alcohol and said ketone being the only effective antimicrobially active components in said antimicrobial composition; and

an inactive agent comprising water, wherein said alcohol and said ketone remain miscible in said water, and wherein said alcohol and said ketone combined in amounts which kill viable microorganisms by greater than 2-log 10 within a time period of about five minutes to about thirty minutes.

2. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein said alcohol comprises about 30% to about 50% by volume, and wherein said ketone comprises about 2% to about 10% by volume.

3. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein said composition is selected from the group consisting of: methanol 50%, acetone 10%, and water 40% v/v; methanol 50%, 2-butanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; methanol 50%, cyclohexanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; ethanol 50%, acetone 10%, and water 40% v/v; ethanol 50%, 2-butanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; ethanol 50%, cyclohexanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; isopropanol 50%, acetone 10%, and water 40% v/v; isopropanol 50%, 2-butanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; isopropanol 50%, cyclohexanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; N-propanol 50%, acetone 10%, and water 40% v/v; N-propanol 50%, 2-butanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; N-propanol 50%, cyclohexanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; 2-butanol 50%, acetone 10%, and water 40% v/v; 2-butanol 50%, 2-butanone 10%, and water 40% v/v; and 2-butanol 50%, cyclohexanone 10%, and water 40% v/v.

4. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein said alcohol and said ketone comprise isopropanol 50% and acetone 10% by volume.

5. The antimicrobial composition of claim 1 , wherein said viable microorganisms occur within a flow path of a microfluidic instrument, said antimicrobial composition has a flow within said flow path of said microfluidic instrument to kill said viable microorganisms within said flow path by greater than 2-log 10 within said time period of about five minutes to about thirty minutes.

6. The antimicrobial composition of claim 5 , wherein said flow of said antimicrobial composition in said flow path of said microfluidic device generated by an amount of pressure exerted on the external surface of a variable volume container containing said antimicrobial composition.

7. The antimicrobial composition of claim 6 , wherein said flow of said antimicrobial composition in said flow path of a microfluidic device occurs in a flow cytometer.
