Abstract

This invention discloses a heterogeneous mesh network comprised of multiple radio access technology nodes, wherein nodes can function dynamically, switching roles between client and server. Moreover, these nodes can operate in a heterogeneous fashion with respect to one another. In an alternate embodiment, the invention describes a mesh network comprised of nodes operating over TV white-space. This invention additionally discloses self-organizing network embodiments and embodiments that include novel methods of monitoring operational parameters within a mesh network, adjusting those operational parameters, and creating and implementing routing tables.

Claims (21)

1. A multi-radio access technology (multi-RAT) mesh network node comprising:

a baseband processor;

a first RAT interface, coupled to the baseband processor;

a second RAT interface, coupled to the baseband processor; and

a general-purpose processor coupled to the baseband processor, wherein the general-purpose processor is configured to communicate with at least one remote mesh network node to establish a mesh network,

wherein the multi-RAT mesh network node is configured to designate either the first RAT interface or the second RAT interface as a backhaul interface for communicating with the remote mesh network node,

wherein the multi-RAT mesh network node is configured to designate either the first or the second RAT interface as an access interface for providing radio coverage as a base station to, and for communicating to a wireless network operator core network on behalf of, at least one mobile device,

wherein the multi-RAT mesh network node provides connectivity to a cloud coordination server to the remote mesh network node, and

wherein the multi-RAT mesh network node is enabled to dynamically change the designation of the first RAT interface or the second RAT interface from the backhaul interface to the access interface, or from the access interface to the backhaul interface, based on receiving an instruction to change the designation based on a determination at the cloud coordination server.

2. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the first RAT interface is a Wi-Fi mesh network interface and the second RAT interface is a Long Term Evolution (LTE) interface for providing LTE base station functionality to at least one mobile device.

3. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , further comprising a timing source.

4. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , further comprising a global positioning system (GPS) radio interface.

5. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , further comprising a wired Ethernet network interface.

6. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the general-purpose processor is configured to perform routing of network packets to and from the first and the second RAT interfaces.

7. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the first RAT interface is configured to provide access to one or more mobile devices and the second RAT interface is configured to couple to the remote mesh network node.

8. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the timing source is a global positioning system (GPS) radio interface.

9. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second RAT interfaces provide access over at least two of: a 2.4 GHz frequency band; a 5 GHz frequency band; a 700 MHz frequency band; a television white space (TVWS) frequency band; a 3G cellular network frequency band; and an LTE cellular network frequency band.

10. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the common processor is configured to perform synchronization of timing with the remote mesh network node.

11. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the common processor and the baseband processor are located on discrete daughtercards coupled via a common bus.

12. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the first and the second RAT interfaces are located on discrete daughtercards coupled via a common bus.

13. The multi-RAT mesh network node of claim 1 , wherein the multi-RAT mesh network node is configured to dynamically change the designation of the first RAT interface from the backhaul interface to the access interface, and to dynamically change the designation of the second RAT interface from the access interface to the backhaul interface.
