Abstract

A novel hydrogen absorption material is provided comprising a mixture of a lithium hydride with a fullerene. The subsequent reaction product provides for a hydrogen storage material which reversibly stores and releases hydrogen at temperatures of about 270° C.

Claims (18)

1. A process of making a hydrogen storage composition comprising the steps of reacting a complex alkali metal hydride with a fullerene in the presence of a solvent, thereby forming a first reaction product;

subjecting said first reaction product to an elevated temperature thereby releasing said solvent and additionally reacting a metal derived from the alkali metal hydride with said fullerene, thereby forming a second reaction product, said second reaction product comprising a hydrogen storage composite material having reversible hydrogen storage and release properties.

2. The process according to the process of claim 1 wherein said hydrogen storage composite material can reversibly store and release up to about 5 wt % hydrogen.

3. The process according to the process of claim 1 wherein the hydrogen storage composite material has an initial hydrogen release temperature of about 270° C.

4. The process according to claim 1 , wherein at a hydrogen release temperature of said hydrogen storage composite material, the hydrogen storage composite material releases no volatile hydrocarbons.

5. The process according to claim 1 wherein the process further includes the step of subjecting said hydrogen storage composite material to a hydrogen gas applied under pressure and heated to a temperature of about 350° C.

6. The process according to claim 1 wherein the second reaction product consists essentially of a composition according to the formula Li x C 60 H y where X has a value of between 1 to 20 and y has a value of between 0 to 70 and the composition reversibly stores and releases about 5 weight % hydrogen.

7. The process according to claim 1 wherein the alkali metal comprises Li and a ratio of Li:C 60 is a least 6:1.

8. The process according to claim 1 wherein the complex alkali metal hydride comprises at least one of NaAlH 4 , LiAlH 4 , LiBH 4 , or LiH.

9. A process of making a hydrogen storage composition comprising the steps of reacting a lithium-containing hydride with a fullerene in the presence of a solvent, thereby forming a first reaction product;

subjecting said first reaction product to an elevated temperature thereby releasing said solvent and additionally reacting the lithium derived from the hydride with said fullerene, thereby forming a second reaction product, said second reaction product comprising a hydrogen storage composite material having reversible hydrogen storage and release properties; and

wherein said second reaction product is a composition according to Li x C 60 H y where x has a value of between 1 to 10 and y has a value of between 0 to 70.

10. The process according to claim 9 wherein the mole ratio of LiH:C 60 is at least 6:1.

11. The process according to the process of claim 9 wherein the mole ratio of LiH:C 60 is 6:1 and y has a value of about 40.

12. The process according to claim 9 wherein the process further includes the step of subjecting said hydrogen storage composition to a hydrogen gas applied under pressure and heated to a temperature of about 350° C.

13. A process of making a hydrogen storage composition comprising the steps of reacting a metal hydride selected from the group consisting of magnesium containing hydrides, with a fullerene in the presence of a solvent, thereby forming a first reaction product:

subjecting said first reaction product to an elevated temperature thereby releasing said solvent and additionally reacting said magnesium with said fullerene, thereby forming a second reaction product, said second reaction product comprising a hydrogen storage composite material having reversible hydrogen storage and release properties; and

wherein said second reaction product is a composition according to MgH 2 C 50 .
