Abstract

In one aspect, a system may generally include a waste disposal having a disposal inlet and a disposal conduit in fluid communication with the waste disposal. The disposal conduit may include an inlet end and an outlet end, with the outlet end being fluidly connected to the disposal inlet of the waste disposal. The system may also include a supply conduit in fluid communication with a water supply. The supply conduit may include a discharge end spaced apart from the inlet end such that an air gap is defined between the disposal conduit and the supply conduit. In addition, the system may include a housing at least partially surrounding the air gap and an air gap switch provided in association with the housing. The air gap switch may be configured to control a supply of power to the waste disposal.

Claims (37)

1 . A system, comprising:

a waste disposal including a disposal inlet;

a disposal conduit in fluid communication with the waste disposal, the disposal conduit including an inlet end and an outlet end, the outlet end being fluidly connected to the disposal inlet of the waste disposal;

at least one supply conduit in fluid communication with a water supply, the at least one supply conduit including a discharge end spaced apart from the inlet end of the disposal conduit such that an air gap is defined between the disposal conduit and the at least one supply conduit;

a housing at least partially surrounding the air gap; and

an air gap switch provided in association with the housing, the air gap switch being configured to control a supply of power to the waste disposal such that actuation of the air gap switch turns the supply of power to the waste disposal on and off.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the air gap switch corresponds to one of a mechanical switch, a capacitive touch switch, a Hall Effect switch or a Reed switch.

3 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a switching mechanism electrically coupled between the waste disposal and a power source.

4 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the air gap switch is electrically coupled to the switching mechanism such that actuation of the air gap switch adjusts the switching mechanism between opened and closed states for turning the power supplied to the waste disposal on and off.

5 . The system of claim 3 , wherein the switching mechanism corresponds to a power relay.

6 . The water supply system of claim 1 , further comprising a valve provided in operative association with the at least one supply conduit, the valve being configured to control the flow of water from the water supply through the at least one supply conduit.

7 . The water supply system of claim 6 , wherein the air gap switch is configured to control the supply of power to both the waste disposal and the valve such that waste disposal and the valve are simultaneously powered via actuation of the air gap switch.

8 . A water supply system for a waste disposal, the water supply system comprising:

a first supply conduit configured to be in fluid communication with a first water supply, the first supply conduit having a first discharge end;

a second supply conduit configured to be in fluid communication with a second water supply, the second supply conduit having a second discharge end;

a disposal conduit in fluid communication with the first and second supply conduits, the disposal conduit including an inlet end and an outlet end, the disposal conduit being spaced apart from the first and second conduits such that an air gap is defined between the inlet end and the first and second discharge ends, the inlet end being configured to receive water expelled from the first and second supply conduits via the first and second discharge ends;

a valve provided in operative association with the second supply conduit, the valve being configured to control the flow of water from the second water supply through the second supply conduit;

a housing at least partially surrounding the air gap; and

an air gap switch provided in association with the housing, the air gap switch being configured to control a supply of power to the waste disposal and the valve such that actuation of the air gap switch turns the supply of power to the waste disposal and the valve on and off,

wherein the outlet end of the disposal conduit is configured to be in fluid communication with a disposal inlet of the waste disposal such that, when the valve is powered via actuation of the air gap switch, water flows from the second supply conduit into the disposal conduit via the air gap and is subsequently received within the waste disposal.

9 . The water supply system of claim 8 , wherein the air gap switch corresponds to one of a mechanical switch, a capacitive touch switch, a Hall Effect switch or a Reed switch.

10 . The water supply system of claim 8 , further comprising a switching mechanism electrically coupled between the a power source and both the waste disposal and the valve.

The water supply system of claim 10 , wherein the air gap switch is electrically coupled to the switching mechanism such that actuation of the air gap switch adjusts the switching mechanism between opened and closed states for turning the power supplied to the waste disposal and the valve on and off.

12 . The water supply system of claim 10 , wherein the switching mechanism corresponds to a power relay.

13 . The water supply system of claim 8 , wherein the first water supply corresponds to a dishwasher in fluid communication with the first supply conduit.

14 . The water supply system of claim 13 , wherein the separate water supply corresponds to a water supply separate from the dishwasher.

15 . The water supply system of claim 8 , wherein the disposal inlet corresponds to a secondary inlet of the waste disposal, the waste disposal further comprising a primary inlet separate from the secondary inlet that is configured to receive water from an associated sink.

16 . A system, comprising:

an electrical component;

a first conduit extending between an inlet end and an outlet end;

a second conduit in fluid communication with the first conduit, the second conduit including a discharge end spaced apart from the inlet end of the first conduit such that an air gap is defined between the first and second conduits;

a housing at least partially surrounding the air gap; and

an air gap switch provided in association with the housing, the air gap switch being configured to control a supply of power to the electrical component such that actuation of the air gap switch turns the supply of power to the electrical component on and off.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the air gap switch corresponds to one of a mechanical switch, a capacitive touch switch, a Hall Effect switch or a Reed switch.

18 . The system of claim 16 , further comprising a switching mechanism electrically coupled between the electrical component and a power source.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the air gap switch is electrically coupled to the switching mechanism such that actuation of the air gap switch adjusts the switching mechanism between opened and closed states for turning the power supplied to the electrical component on and off.

The system of claim 16 , wherein the electrical component corresponds to a waste disposal, wherein the outlet end of the first conduit is in fluid communication with a disposal inlet of the waste disposal such that, as water is directed through the second conduit and flows across the air gap, the water is received within the first conduit and is subsequently delivered to the waste disposal.
