Pharmaceutical compositions comprising omega-3 fatty acids
The present disclosure relates to, inter alia, pharmaceutical compositions comprising omega-3 fatty acids.
1. A pharmaceutical composition comprising (a) docosapentaenoic acid in an amount of about 5% by weight of all fatty acids; (b) eicosapentaenoic acid in an amount of 60% to 95% by weight, of all fatty acids present in the composition; and (c) at least one surfactant.
2. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the eicosapentaenoic acid is present in an amount of at least 70% to 90%, by weight, of all fatty acids present in the composition.
3. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the eicosapentaenoic acid is present in an amount selected from the group consisting of 60%, 70%, and 80%, by weight, of all fatty acids present in the composition.
4. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the composition further comprises docosahexaenoic acid or an ester thereof.
5. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 4 wherein the docosahexaenoic acid or ester thereof is ethyl docosahexaenoate.
6. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 5 wherein the ethyl docosahexaenoate comprises not more than about 30% by weight of all fatty acids present in the composition.
7. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the docosapentaenoic or pharmaceutically acceptable ester, derivative, conjugate or salt thereof is ethyl docosapentaenoate.
8. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the eicosapentaenoic acid or pharmaceutically acceptable ester, derivative, conjugate or salt thereof is ethyl eicosapentaenoate.

The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one surfactant is selected from the group consisting of quaternary ammonium compounds, dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, polyoxyethylene alkylphenyl ethers, poloxamers, polyoxyethylene fatty acid glycerides and oils, polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers, polyoxyethylene fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters, propylene glycol fatty acid esters, sodium lauryl sulfate, glyceryl fatty acid esters, sorbitan esters, tyloxapol, and mixtures thereof.
10. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one surfactant is selected from the group consisting of polysorbate 20, polysorbate 80, and mixtures thereof.
11. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one surfactant is polysorbate 80 and a poloxamer.
12. The pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the at least one surfactant is present in an amount of 0.25% to 15%, by total weight, of the pharmaceutical composition.
