Abstract

We have disclosed systems and methods for portable performance monitoring of an individual during a physical activity. The systems and methods may include a portable sensor component configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity and configured to obtain movement data for the athlete individual during the physical activity. The systems and methods may also include a portable output component configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity and configured to provide an output to the individual during the physical activity. The systems and methods may further include a portable processing component in communication with the portable sensor component and the portable output component, where the portable processing component is configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity. The portable processing component may be configured to identify movement of the individual during the physical activity.

Claims (19)

1. A portable performance monitoring system for monitoring an individual during a physical activity, the portable performance monitoring system comprising:

a portable sensor component configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity and configured to obtain movement data for the individual during the physical activity;

a portable output component configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity and configured to provide an output to the individual during the physical activity; and

a portable processing component in communication with the portable sensor component and the portable output component, wherein the portable processing component is configured to be carried by the individual during the physical activity,

wherein the portable processing component is configured to identify movement of the individual during the physical activity based on the movement data received from the portable sensor component, and is further configured to provide a control signal to the portable output component to generate an output based on the identified movement of the individual.

2. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor component comprises one of a satellite positioning system receiver and an accelerometer, and wherein the movement data comprises one of location, distance traveled, and speed data.

3. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the sensor component is configured to be mounted to one of the individual's arm, wrist, hand, finger, leg, foot, head, and waist.

4. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a voice input component for receiving voice input data from the individual, wherein the portable processing component is configured to save the voice input data in association with the movement data.

5. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output component comprises one of an audio output comprising a speaker and a visual display comprising a display screen.

6. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output component comprises an audio output, and wherein the portable processing component is configured to control playback volume at the audio output based on receiving a manual input from the individual.

7. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output component comprises an audio output, and wherein the portable processing component is configured to control playback volume at the audio output based on the movement data.

8. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output based on the identified movement of the individual is further based on an approaching route condition.

9. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output based on the identified movement of the individual is further based on a determination that the individual has reached a specific location.

10. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output based on the identified movement of the individual is further based on a determination that the individual has fallen behind a predetermined goal.

11. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 10 , wherein the goal is one of a pace goal and a speed goal.

12. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 10 , wherein the goal is a heart rate goal.

13. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the output component is configured to be mounted to one of the individual's arm, wrist, hand, finger, leg, foot, head, and waist.

14. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a wireless telephone communications component for conducting telephonic communications during the physical activity.

15. The portable performance monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprising a digital audio file player component for playing digital audio files during the physical activity.
