Abstract

Techniques to selectively capture media using a single user interface element are described. In one embodiment, an apparatus may comprise a touch controller, a visual media capture component, and a storage component. The touch controller may be operative to receive a haptic engagement signal. The visual media capture component may be operative to be configured in a capture mode based on whether a haptic disengagement signal is received by the touch controller before expiration of a first timer, the capture mode one of a photo capture mode or video capture mode, the first timer started in response to receiving the haptic engagement signal, the first timer configured to expire after a first preset duration. The storage component may be operative to store visual media captured by the visual media capture component in the configured capture mode. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Claims (47)

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

processing, using an operating system of a device, haptic contact signals from a display;

sending a first report of a first haptic contact signal to an application running under the operating system, wherein the first haptic contact signal is initiated when contact is made with an interface element of the display and sustained when contact strays from the interface element and remains in a predetermined zone surrounding the interface element;

receiving an instruction from the application to record a photograph, in a photo mode, in response to sending the first report of the first haptic contact signal;

initiating a recording of a video in a video mode;

sending a second report of a second haptic contact signal to the application, wherein the second haptic contact signal is a haptic contact release signal that occurs after a specified period of time after the first haptic contact signal; and

receiving an instruction from the application to store a video in response to sending the second report of the second haptic contact signal.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the interface element is a capture icon displayed on the display.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

engaging an illumination element in a photo-specific mode while recording the photograph.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

engaging an illumination element in a video-specific mode when recording the video.

5. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

displaying the captured photograph or video;

receiving a user command to transmit the captured photograph or video; and

uploading the captured photograph or video to a network server in response to the received user command.

6. An electronic device, comprising:

one or more digital image sensors to capture visual media in a photo mode and a video mode;

a display to present the visual media from the digital image sensors;

a touch controller to identify haptic contact engagement, haptic contact persistence and haptic contact release on the display;

a visual media capture controller to alternately store the visual media as a photograph or a video based upon an evaluation of the time period between the haptic contact engagement and the haptic contact release; and

an operating system running on the electronic device to send a first report of the haptic contact engagement to an application running under the operating system, wherein the first haptic contact signal is initiated when contact is made with an interface element of the display and sustained when contact strays from the interface element and remains in a predetermined zone surrounding the interface element, to send a second report of a haptic contact release to the application, and to receive an instruction from the application to engage the visual media capture controller in a photo mode or a video mode.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the interface element is a capture icon displayed on the display.

8. The apparatus of claim 6 , comprising:

an illumination element engaged in a photo-specific mode while recording the photograph.

9. The apparatus of claim 6 , comprising:

an illumination element engaged in a video-specific mode while recording the video.

10. The apparatus of claim 6 , comprising:

the display operative to display the captured photograph or video;

the touch controller operative to receive a user command to transmit the captured visual media; and

the visual media capture controller operative to upload the captured photograph or video to a network server in response to the received user command.

11. At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

process, using an operating system of a device, haptic contact signals from a display;

send a first report of a first haptic contact signal to an application running under the operating system, wherein the first haptic contact signal is initiated when contact is made with an interface element of the display and sustained when contact strays from the interface element and remains in a predetermined zone surrounding the interface element;

receive an instruction from the application to record a photograph, in a photo mode, in response to sending the first report of the first haptic contact signal;

initiate a recording of a video in a video mode;

send a second report of a second haptic contact signal, wherein the second haptic contact signal is a haptic contact release signal that occurs after a specified period of time after the first haptic contact signal; and

receive an instruction from the application to store a video in response to sending the second report of the second haptic contact signal.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the interface element is a capture icon displayed on the display.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , comprising further instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

engage an illumination element in a photo-specific mode while recording the photograph.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , comprising further instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

engage an illumination element in a video-specific mode when recording the video.

15. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , comprising further instructions that, when executed, cause a system to:

display the captured photograph or video;

receive a user command to transmit the captured photograph or video; and

upload the captured photograph or video to a network server in response to the received user command.
