Abstract

A high efficiency configuration for a solar cell module comprises solar cells arranged in a shingled manner to form super cells, which may be arranged to efficiently use the area of the solar module, reduce series resistance, and increase module efficiency.

Claims (43)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a first solar module comprising a plurality of rectangular solar cells arranged in line with sides of adjacent solar cells physically parallel, laterally overlapping, and conductively bonded to each other in series with an adhesive to form a super cell;

wherein for each pair of adjacent and laterally overlapping solar cells in the super cell at least one solar cell in the pair comprises a front or rear surface conductive metallization pattern that includes an electrically conductive raised solar cell surface feature running parallel to an edge of the solar cell that is laterally overlapped by the other solar cell of the pair and perpendicular to the line along which the solar cells are arranged, and a bus bar or contact pad located on the front or rear surface of the solar cell laterally adjacent to the electrically conductive raised surface feature and between the electrically conductive raised surface feature and the overlapped edge; and

wherein the adhesive that bonds the pair of solar cells together overlies the bus bar or contact pad and the electrically conductive raised surface feature forms a barrier to spreading of the adhesive-from the bus bar or contact pad out of the overlapping region of the pair of solar cells in a direction parallel to the line along which the solar cells are arranged and away from the overlapped edge of the solar cell.

2. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive raised solar cell surface feature is on a front surface of a solar cell.

3. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the electrically conductive raised solar cell surface feature comprises a conductive line running parallel to and substantially along the overlapped edge of the solar cell.

4. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein:

the metallization pattern further comprises a plurality of fingers; and

the electrically conductive raised solar cell surface feature electrically interconnects the fingers to provide multiple conductive paths from each finger to the contact pad or bus bar.

5. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a plurality of discrete contact pads arranged in a row adjacent to and parallel to the overlapped edge, wherein the raised solar cell surface feature comprises a plurality of separate barriers arranged to confine the adhesive to the discrete contact pads.

6. An apparatus as in claim 5 wherein each of the plurality of separate barriers is located abutting a corresponding one of the discrete contact pads.

7. An apparatus as in claim 6 wherein each of the plurality of separate barriers is taller than its corresponding discrete contact pad.

8. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the solar cell surface feature is hidden between overlapping solar cells.

9. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the solar cell surface feature is on a back surface of a solar cell.

10. An apparatus as in claim 9 wherein the solar cell surface feature comprises a plurality of separate barriers arranged to confine the adhesive to a plurality of discrete contact pads located on a front surface of the overlapping solar cell.

11. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein each of the plurality of separate barriers is located abutting a corresponding one of the discrete contact pads.

12. An apparatus as in claim 11 wherein each of the plurality of separate barriers is taller than its corresponding discrete contact pad.

13. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein each solar cell of the super cell has a breakdown voltage of 10V or greater.

14. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the super cell has a length in a direction of current flow of at least about 500 mm.

15. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein a first one of the solar cells comprises a chamfered portion.

16. An apparatus as in claim 15 wherein a longest side of the first solar cell overlaps and is conductively bonded to a longest side of a second one of the solar cells having a chamfered corner, and the chamfered corners on the two solar cells face away from each other.

17. An apparatus as in claim 15 wherein a second one of the solar cells does not have a chamfered corner, a longest side of the first solar cell overlaps and is conductively bonded to a long side of the second solar cell, and a width of the first solar cell is greater than a width of the second solar cell such that the first solar cell and the second solar cell have approximately a same front surface area exposed to light.

18. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the first solar module comprises a first backing sheet and a second super cell and the super cell is arranged with the second super cell on the first backing sheet.

19. An apparatus as in claim 18 wherein the backing sheet is white and comprises darkened stripes of location and width corresponding to gaps between the super cell and the second super cell.

20. An apparatus as in claim 18 wherein the first solar module comprises a top conductive ribbon on a front surface facing a direction of solar energy, the apparatus further comprising:

a second solar module comprising a second backing sheet, a third super cell disposed on the second backing sheet, and a bottom ribbon on a bottom side facing away from the solar energy, and

wherein the second solar module overlaps and is bonded to a portion of the first solar module including the top ribbon.

21. An apparatus as in claim 20 wherein the second solar module is bonded to the first solar module by adhesive.

22. An apparatus as in claim 20 further comprising a junction box overlapped by the second solar module.

23. An apparatus as in claim 22 wherein the second solar module is bonded to the first solar module by a mating arrangement between the junction box and another junction box on the second solar module.

24. An apparatus as in claim 22 wherein the junction box houses a single terminal.

25. An apparatus as in claim 20 further comprising a switch between the first solar module and the second solar module.

26. An apparatus as in claim 25 further comprising a voltage sensing controller in communication with the switch.

27. An apparatus as in claim 20 wherein the super cell comprises not fewer than nineteen solar cells individually electrically connected in parallel with a single bypass diode.

28. An apparatus as in claim 27 wherein the single bypass diode is positioned near a first solar module edge.

29. An apparatus as in claim 27 wherein the single bypass diode is positioned in a laminate structure.

30. An apparatus as in claim 29 wherein the super cell is encapsulated within the laminate structure.

31. An apparatus as in claim 27 wherein the single bypass diode is positioned around a first solar module perimeter.

32. An apparatus as in claim 18 wherein the super cell and the second super cell are individually connected to a power management device.

33. An apparatus as in claim 18 further comprising a power management device configured to,
